UNIT:E - More Reboots from The Hub
|
|
|
No doubt inspired by the success of the relaunches of earlier Hasbro properties such as Transformers Prime and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, The Hub has been busy masterminding a project known as UNIT:E, with proposed reboots of other past properties such as Action Man, Micronauts, MASK, Stretch Armstrong, COPS (not to be confused with the FOX reality show), Jem and Candy Land. Yeah, I said Candy Land. Details can be found here. UNIT:E is said to be intially launched as a "What If?" multiverse comic book in which all of Hasbro's srespective worlds collide, described as a sort of "test the waters" kind of deal. No doubt shows will come later if the books sells well. There's also to be a new Transformers series entitled Transformers Rescue Bots, based on the new toy line, depicting chibi versions of the famous robots aiding humans in such civic duties as firefighting and police work. Think Transformers getting the Super Hero Squad Show treatment. While I'm not the least bit surprised that Hasbro is planning all of these toyetic relaunches (that is one of the reason why The Hub was launched, after all), it would be nice if the network could get some original series in there as well. But perhaps that will come in time.

If this comes to pass, I must say I would like to see a new M.A.S.K. and C.O.P.S., both. That's not to say I wouldn't like to see the originals, if the Hub aired those. As for the others, meh.

Hasbro has been teasing the public about a possible Jem relaunch for nearly 2 years now. Even on that display, there's a shot of the Jem logo, but no pictures. I'm no Jem fan, but if G.I.Joe, Transformers, Stretch Armstrong and Rescue Heroes can be resurrected, there's no reason whatsoever why Hasbro can't revive Jem. The main reason that I've heard from fans for there shouldn't be a Jem revival is because the original series looked, sounded, everything but smelled like the 1980s, but I think that even though the hair band era is pretty much done now, there are enough female pop stars who dress outrageously such as Lady Gaga and the like that Jem could easily be updated for the 21st century. It'll be interesting to see what a new Stretch Armstrong project will be like, assuming that it ever actually happens, that is. I've never followed M.A.S.K. much, but I'm hoping that the reboot won't include the uber-annoying annoying character of Scott Tracker, or at the very least that Scott's character will be revised so that he's not totally useless.

Last year I heard that there was also a Candy Land movie in talks as well (likewise, a Stretch Armstrong movie has apparently been in development hell for years now)...I don't know if that and this comic/potential reboot series are connected to one another, but as with the movie, a Candy Land project could potentially work, provided that its' producers use a light touch and keep it tongue-in-cheek; with the right writing behind it, CL could possibly become a cult hit like MLP: Friendhsip is Magic; however, if Hasbro actually tries to make Candy Land edgy and serious, it's likely to just be unintentionally hilarious. Here's a cap of Princess Lolly from the Candy Land comic:
Here's MASK:
And finally, a cap of Jem:

Regarding Candy Land, this is minor, but I hope for the new project, that Hasbro will decide to turn Princess Frostine back into Queen Frostine. I think it's ridiculous how the media is now treating "Queen" like it's a bad word. On My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Lauren Faust originally created Princess Celestia to be a Queen, but Hasbro insisted that the character's title be changed because they feel (or felt at the time) that Queens were associated with evil characters. If Kings can be both good and evil, then why can't the same be assumed for queens? If I have to see one one ore fairy tale land with a king and no queen, I'm going to scream. Plus, I just plain like the title "Queen Frostine" more than "Princess Frostine"; Queen Frostine rhymes.

:^: Well, I do know that the character of Lolly had her name changed back to Princess Lolly in 2010, so it's possible that Frostine will be made into a Queen again, assuming this hasn't happened already (I'm not what you'd call well-educated on the board game scene). But yeah, 'Queen Frostine' sounds better than 'Princess Frostine'. 'Princess Frostine' doesn't rhyme. 'Queen Frostine' rolls off the tongue better.
