Vault Disney You Must Register Before You Can Post

I really miss the Vault Disney on Disney Channel. Even though I saw it a few times in 2001, I thought it was awesome.

I hope the Walt Disney Co. would make a TV Station for the Classic Disney Cartoons.

Re: Vault Disney [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

Disney already has 2 channels, one of which is already devoted to nearly all animation; I doubt they'd create a third just for the old Mickey, Donald and Goofy shorts. Those cartoons alone wouldn't be enough to fill a 24-hour time slot, unless you were to also throw in some classic Disney shows like The Mouse Factory or the classic Mickey Mouse Club and movies like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes. NOTE: that would basically be the original Disney Channel, and if that format were still profitable, they wouldn't have changed it in the first place. It would be easier (not to mention more economically feasible) to simply reformat one of their existing channels to accommodate the classics.

Unfortunately, with accountants and admen running the channels now, and Disney trying to milk all they can out of Hannah Montana, High School Musical and their other teen/tween franchises, classic Disney animation isn't a blip on Disney's radar right now. The only way Disney would start airing the old shorts on TV again would be if they thought substantial ratings and money could be made from them. The fact that many of these shorts are already on DVD only lessens the chances of this happening. Disney may want to keep the shorts exclusive to DVD; why would Joe Average Consumer pay $20-$40 for a DVD collection of Disney shorts when they could just watch them on basic cable every day for next to nothing a month?

Re: Vault Disney [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

My 2 cents:

A classic Disney shorts channel was what Toon Disney was originally supposed to be, but Disney couldn't have 24 hours of classic shorts alone, so the Disney Afternoon and 1 Saturday Morning reruns and 3rd party acquisitions such as Toad Patrol and U.B.O.S. were added to the schedule to fill out the running time.

Then came the blessing/curse of Jetix, which is Disney's equivalent to the Frankenstein monster. Jetix was initially jusit a action block for Toon Disney, then it expanded to become half of TD's lineup.

Instead of Disney creating a 4th channel for the classics that would probably have a very rocky start, since it would be available in even fewer homes than Toon Disney and Nicktoons Network, I think that ABC Family should become the Vault Disney channel.

Why? Because ABC Family is currently a waste of a channel. It's just sitting there on the dial, serving no real purpose. Aside from Greek, which I honestly thought had been canceled before I saw the promo for the new season, what does ABC Family even show? Slacker Cats? Is that even still on? I don't know, I'm asking.

All the Mouse House would need to do is transform ABC Family into the Vault Disney channel, which would only show classic Disney shorts, Disney series' such as The Wonderful World of Disney and Mousterpiece Theater, as well as the occasional 3rd party acquisition. Also, the Vault Disney channel should run commercial free, like Boomerang. Because ads would mean sponsors, and sponsors would mean ratings, and ratings would mean more original programming and less time for the classics, which would defeat the purpose of the Vault Disney channel.

Re: Vault Disney [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

The Hallmark Channel was showing vintage live-action Disney films from the 1950s to the 1970s for a period. That would be a natural Vault Disney addition. Apparently, there was no room in the Disney tv empire even for its own classic live-action films.

Pat Robertson still has that hold on "The Family Channel" (even with FOX and then ABC owning it) and insists "The 700 Club" show and "wholesome family programming" remains on the schedule.

Robertson also insists that the word "Family" remain in the channel's title, no matter what it's called. Disney could always rename the channel Disney Family or Family Disney (six of one, half a dozen of the other).

I really like your idea for ABC Family. Maybe when the new CEO settles down, the Disney Channel may show the Classics...or at least on DVD.

Why was it ever taken off? Sorry I don't care to see ANY of the exclusively teen-oriented shows on Disney channel nowadays.
