"Wapos Bay" up for five of Canada's Gemini Awards

Hot on the heels of the Emmy Awards, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced early Tuesday its nominations for the Emmys' Canadian equivalent, the Gemini Awards. Wapos Bay, an animated series set among the native Cree of northern Saskatchewan, picked up five nominations for the 25th Annual Gemini Awards, recognizing the year's best in Canadian English-language TV. The show from Wapos Bay Productions is one of five nominees in the category of Best Animated Program or Series. DerRic Starlight is up for Best Performance in an Animated Program or Series for the episode It Came From Out There. The Wapos Bay episode The Hardest Lesson earned Gemini nominations for Best Direction in an Animated Program or Series (Trevor Cameron), Best Original Music Score for an Animated Program or Series (Ross Nykiforuk), and Best Writing in a Children's or Youth Program or Series (Cameron again). The other nominees for Best Animated Program or Series are Glenn Martin, DDS (Cuppa Coffee Studios/Tornante Animation/Rogers Broadcasting Ltd.), Guess With Jess (Nelvana Limited/Classic Media Royalty House), Johnny Test (Cookie Jar Entertainment Inc.) and Kid Vs Kat (Studio B Productions/YTV/Disney XD Europe). The new series Producing Parker, from Breakthrough Entertainment, earned three Gemini nominations. Robin Budd received a nod for Best Direction in an Animated Program or Series for the episode "Eat, Pray, Parker," while the episode "The Skinny of Parker" gave Kristin Booth and Kim Cattrall individual nominations for Best Performance in an Animated Program or Series. Other nominees for Best Direction in an Animated Program or Series are Faruk Cemalovic for the Stoked episode "O Broseph, Where Art Thou?", Ken Cunningham for the Glenn Martin, DDS episode The Tooth Shall Set You Free, and Johnny Darrell and Clint Butler for the Hot Wheels: Battle Force 5 episode Junkyard Dogged. Two appearances in Breakthrough Films' Jimmy Two-Shoes were also nominated for Best Performance in an Animated Program or Series. Sean Cullen is up for his work in the episode Wish You Weren't Here, while Cory Doran has a nod for the episode Rear Pickle. Rounding out the nominations for Best Original Music Score for an Animated Program or Series are Brian Carson for the Hot Wheels Battle Force 5 episode "Mag Wheels" and John Evans for the Guess With Jess episode "How Can We Decorate the Christmas Tree?". For Best Children's or Youth Fiction Program or Series, the shows nominated include Fresh TV Inc.'s animated series Total Drama Action. Best Pre-School Program or Series nominees include cartoon shows Peep And The Big Wide World (9 Story Entertainment Inc./WGBH) and Wibbly Pig (9 Story Entertainment Inc./Wish). Nominees for Best Performance in a Children's or Youth Program or Series include Jamie Watson for the Peep And The Big Wide World episodes "Magic Duck Dancing"/"Chirp Chirp, Tweet, Tweet, Chirp." Among those up for a Gemini for Best Writing in a Children's or Youth Program or Series are Sheila Dinsmore and John De Klein for the Busytown Mysteries episodes "The Sandcastle Squasher" "The Strange Ski Tracks Mystery" and Scott Fellows for the Johnny Test episodes "Papa Johnny"/"The Johnnyminster Dog Show." This year's Gemini Awards celebrations will be held in Toronto over three nights in November. The Industry Gala Presentations will take place November 2 and 3 at the Kool Haus Entertainment Complex; the Broadcast Gala will take place November 13 at the historic Winter Garden Theatre, and will be broadcast live-to-tape on Global and Showcase. "Over the past 25 years, we have witnessed dramatic changes in the Canadian television industry. The stories that we tell and the ways in which we tell those stories have evolved alongside the technological advancements that have altered the way we watch TV," said Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television CEO Sara Morton. "This year's nominations reflect an industry that is confident and flourishing. Our shows are successful here in Canada and around the world."
