What is the loudest fire alarm you've ever heard? You Must Register Before You Can Post

I'm surprised nobody talked about this on the forum.

I know all fire alarms are supposed to be loud, but which one out of all the ones you've heard at what place might be the loudest?

For me, there are two of them. Once I had to substitute at a 'toon school in the early 2000s, and they had fire alarms that looked kinda like this...

These emitted a very loud buzzer sound, loud enough to wake the dead! I bet they were air-raid siren-volume. They even caused the whole school to vibrate a little.
And if you're wondering, this alarm wasn't made by ACME.

While not as loud as the above alarm, but still very loud, today I was at a building that was having their alarms tested. They looked like this.

These ones don't buzz, like the other one does. Instead, these emit a high-pitched loud screeching sound. These can make you have to stop for a bottle of asprin on your way home!

The last time I heard a fire alarm was in my head when I ate something really spicy. I remember the fire drills while in school but all I recall is that it was loud. No other fire alarms I can compare with.

THe sinks in the student center bathroom at my college always sound like fire alarms when you use them. I am not kidding! One time a girl washing her hands next to me asked me if it was a fire drill.I informed her that it was the sink. I sometimes here them during one of my classes which is in the student center.

one fire drill I've heard in one of my schools when I was younger sounded like a pesky fly was buzzing around-and I would wander around pretending to swat it.

Exactly! They also sound exactly like a police siren!

A friend of mine told me about an elementary school he knows that was built in the late 1990s, they have a fairly new fire alarm system that isn't very loud, he explained it was one that did a Star Trek-like slow whooping sound and a voice-evacuation message.

Re: What is the loudest fire alarm you've ever hea [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

I was only half-kidding about not hearing any alarms. Where I used to work, we had the alarm system that appears in your bottom pic. I only ever saw it work (the strobe light, that is). They must've had the sirens on "mute," so I can't tell you what it sounded like. And that's a little embarrassing for me, because I was the deputy fire "warden" for my floor (it's true!). Anyway, that's all in the past now because our company went bust earlier this year, putting all of us out of work. I wish we had a "fired" alarm—that would've have been helpful.

I'm replying to my own post with some happy news: today, I just got a new job—I start this Monday. I figured if I'm going to share my bleak news with everyone, I ought to share the good, too.

Sorry to go off-topic with this. We now return to our regularly scheduled Forum thread, already in progress…

That's easy to answer: the one in my apartment building. Most of the alarms here are crank ones, anyway.

Damn, I hated those Fire Alarm buzzers. The school that I went to called "Douglas MacArthur" which was the first school in my area to be a year-round school had those buzzers and they scared me half to death!

For those wondering, ACME does have a fire alarm division, I found out. They resell fire alarm products made by the following companies...

Well, yesterday i got to hear the fire alarm at my new job, and it really hurt. The alarm was the "strobing" kind, with the piercing shriek. It actually drove me from the room.

Exact same kind as in the pic, or did it look different?

It's a little different in that the strobe fits horizontally above the squawk box.

You mean like this?

I see this kind almost everywhere these days.

Oh, and BTW, I read that strobes like that are now required by law on fire alarms. They have to be bright and flash at least once a second.

When I was at Tri-C, sometimes a certain building would test the Fire Alarms and I would go "What the hell is that"?

You mean like this?

That's close to what we have. If you move the strobe a couple inches down on the alarm's chassis, you'd have a pretty good match.

Then it's probably this.

I know because ACME distributes Wheelock fire alarms in their fire prevention product line. They also distribute the alarm in the second pic I posted (with the strobe on the bottom). That one is made by Space Age Electronics.
