Who is this? You Must Register Before You Can Post

This picture is from Mama's New Hat (which is included in the Marx Brothers: A Day At The Races DVD). Does anybody know who this lady is in the mirror?

Re: Who is this? [In reply to] You Must Register Before You Can Post

She has more than a passing resemblance to actress Veronica Lake, known as "The Girl with the Peek-a-boo Bang."

Lake had a very tragic life after her brief stardom, dying at 53 after appearing as a mad Nazi scientist in the God-awful Flesh Feast (1970).

Jay Ward made the occasional "Veronica Lake" reference when showing a lake in his cartoons.

I'm a Veronica lake fan. I'd say the woman in the mirror looks more like Tallula Bankhead. When she was young, of course...

Further, A Day At The Races was made in 1937. Veronica's first bit part was in 1939, and she wasn't well-known until she made Sullivan's Travels, in 1941. So, I don't see how it could be Veronica.

It might also be Greta Garbo, a similar caricature of Miss Garbo appears in the all star Disney short; “Mickey’s Gala Premiere” (1933).

That could be her. Here is a picture from Mother Goose Goes Hollywood (1938) to compare.

I agree, it might be Garbo, but it looks like Tallulah too. Here's a link to a Tallulah photo:

My computer skills are minimal. If someone wants to post the photo, please do!

Re the See-Saw Margery Daw frame above....

I'm 48 years old & honestly I never heard of that nursery rhyme. Had to Google it.....Wikipedia has an article on it.

What was the deal with Edward G. Robinson on the seesaw?? That had to be a hoot. Was this an Avery classic?

I thought I saw this cartoon way back when....possibly this scene was edited?

I actually have heard of that rhyme: it appeared in an H-B comic book in which Pixie & Dixie were playing on a see-saw. Go figure! This is of course is a memory that provokes other memories: Hasbro toys, orange Ne-Hi, Dion's "Runaround Sue," (I have too much fun dating myself!). Anyway, I'll google the rhyme and see what's what. The frame grab is a hoot. Someday, a new generation will wonder who these people were, if they don't already.

I've never heard of See-Saw Margery Daw either. Until I saw Mother Goose Goes Hollywood which, by the way, is Disney (but very un-Disney like, and one of my favorite Disney cartoons). As far as I know, the cartoon is only available on Walt Disney Treasures: More Silly Symphonies. I also saw it on t.v a couple of times some years back and I remember seeing that scene.

Well, that splains it, Lucy! I thought the frame grab was from a WB cartoon....after all, it has all the earmarks (eye-marks?) of something Avery woulda done.....didn't he do "A Gander at Mother Goose" or something by WB in the late 30s? and weren't pages turned? (like "Jack & Jill went up the hill...." Jack: "The heck with the water!")

You're right...definitely doesn't look Disney... Too hilariously satirical for them.

Yes Avery did a hillarious cartoon called "A Gander at Mother Goose" complete with turning pages. I might have seen this Disney cartoon once shown right before a show called "Amazing Animals" that I watched on Saturdays(and maybe?) Sundays. If the short included a Katherine Hepburn like Little Bo Peep continuously searching for her lost sheep throughout the short than I have definately seen it.
