If Roy Disney were still alive and running things, he probably would have made this happen.

Didn't these hypocrites release this film on a laser disc in Asia some years ago? Check ebay if you still have a laser disc player.

It was released on VHS in the UK a few years back... I have a bootleg DVD, sourced from that version, that I recently purchased online. I can't say where I got it, because that would violate Forum Rules. Do a Google search. The quality is what you'd expect from a 2nd-generation copy... Disney is really doing a disservice to loyal customers and movie-goers by sitting on this film. Didn't someone post an online petition awhile back to get the film released to DVD?

Do you remember the days when Disney animated features would be regularly rereleased in the cinemas - because whereas live action films dated, cartoons had a timeless quality? Seems like nowadays "old" Disney is just for TV and DVD, a safe niche market. Cinema audiences, it appears, will only turn out for "new", "hip" product (and even more so for "New Hip Product 2: The Sequel" and "New Hip Product 3: Moviemaking by Numbers"). "Old" Disney is for home consumption - so it must be safe and non-controversial, so as not to besmirch the Disney 'family image'. This is conventional corporate distributors 'wisdom'. [Notice how the major studios don't make films any more: they just finance and distribute other people's films?] Disney once said, about his reluctance to sell stock in the company, "You see, this isn't 'business' in the sense of primarily making money for shareholders who don't work at it. [...] they might want to make money first and good films would come second. We put the good films first." [Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, Dec 4, 1938 - as reported by Michael Barrier in "The Animated Man".] Add to that the fact that few studio CEOs have ever realised the value of old assets, and I reckon SOTS will always be regarded by the inheritors of Disney's empire as an embarrassment to be buried as quickly as possible. Or so, sadly, it seems to me.

"Song of the South" will be released on DVD...when Cleveland wins a Championship! (Doesn't it seem that way)?
