Re: FAQ with Avatar and Posting pictures. [In reply to] Reply With Quote Reply To Topic

First, welcome to the forum.

Now, on to the subject at hand: to give yourself an avatar, just go to your Profile (you'll find it at the top of the page between 'Main Index' and 'Messages') and upload an avatar from either your computer or the site the image is on; be warned: avatars can only be a certain size, so make sure your avvy isn't too big or it won't fit.

As for posting images, it depends on which operating system you're using; on Chrome, all you have to do is right-click on the image you wish to add and select Copy Image, then on your post right-click again and click Paste. On Firefox, you usually have to copy the image's URL and after pasting it, bracket the URL with 'img'. (Ex: img + image URL + /img. --don't forget to put the brackets around 'img' and '/img' or it won't work.)

Hope that helps.

If you go to your profile and click on the "edit profile" button, there's a space for typing in a signature.

If you want to quote another user, click on the "quote" button in the upper-right-hand corner of the post window and a new textbox will open up for you to type a reply.

Where does it say that? So far as I know, once your account has been activated you can start editing your profile (including uploading an avatar pic) right away.

BTW, this is what a "quote" reply looks like.

Huh... I must be getting forgetful in my old age. It's been a long time since I first signed up. I wonder why that policy exists?

How many here think we should change that and allow new members to upload avatars right away?

I know that there exists a sort of ranking system for members, based on the number of posts (with an emphasis on QUALITY, not quantity.) Only Dave Koch knows the criteria for acquiring a certain rank. It's as secret as KFC's 11 herbs and spices. Tongue

One vote here for leaving the avatar system the way that it is currently. I have seen some raunchy ones on other sites. Perhaps it's best to see and hear how greenhorns comport themselves on this forum before giving them a visual outlet. Now, an avatar of Robert Crumb's Fritz the Cat might be tolerable, but one of Fritz the Cat in delicto flagrante definitely has no place here, the fact that it's animation notwithstanding.

And for what it's worth, a curious and clicky forum member can easily determine the thresholds between member ranks, with only the highest level directors being partially indeterminate.

Reading Dave's Thread, On My Posting Toolbox, There doesn't seem to be an option where you can directly post pictures on your thread posts. Maybe that's Exactly the Same as adding an icon for an Avatar and also coincides with the ranking system (it's still a Forum secret, but im trying to figure it out).

But Again, I've Read Dave Koch's Post and Found Everything mostly Useful, Thanks Dave, Forword please.

The uploading options for images seems to have disappeared from the toolbar below the Editor window. I've not seen it for a couple of weeks now.

Ah, so it has. I also have had problems with getting the picture to show up on the post itself, before the upload bar disappeared.

Really, it disappeared and it was re- re- REMOVED..... just RECENTLY ShockedMad, just my luck, just my luck, i just sign up here having plans to post threads that require images and now the uploading options have disappeared! RRROOOARRR!!! when i am upset i become a viciously ferocious lion, ROOOAAARRR!.

HOLD ON A MINUTE!!!! what am i doing, what am i doing, i know better than to go on a mood swinging roaring rampage, i'm really sorry guys, i guess i should have signed up much earlier when there were more options like posting pictures and when things were just a little more easier on the forum, i'm really sorry guys, i hope you will forgive me, because learning that options like to directly post pictures having been deleted off the forum is abominably SHOCKING and devastating and also some more advanced options i read on Dave's post are also not in place in my toolbar either or may have disappeared like the other options.

Also i forgot to mention, i have a website as well (not mentioning what it is as of now), so i can freely do posts that require images as my heart intends it.

Anyway, just to clear that up, but i do hope the advanced options like directly posting images come back, hopefully Unsure

Maybe that is just temporary as they are fully updating both this forum and the regular site (past GAC forums closing down of course) , so who knows, it may be very secret in store.

I haven't attempted to upload images in a long, long time. Also, I primarily use Google Chrome as my main browser; with IE8 and Firefox as back-ups in case Google crashes.

Unfortunately I can only use "basic editor" in Chrome... The better (IMO), advanced editing tool looks to be only available in IE8. I haven't logged-in using Firefox yet.

As im checking back on this thread, im actually finding this thread itself to be more and more useful and even more, and also speaking, Zavkram, i too also primarily use Google Chrome as my main browser too, and so far I've had no problems whatsoever!

At least the way I use it !!!!!Tongue

By the way, in terms of main individual, we ALL have our own ways of how WE do our OWN things, respectively, and in short definition in terms it's - Free-For-All.

Does anybody have any tips on how to upload an image using IE8? I noticed that Mr. Cleveland was able to, but I still have no "upload image" option.

Mr. Cleveland, if you see this. Did you also use IE8?

For IE8, instead of uploading an image through an in-line attachment, try pasting directly onto the post. This is easily done by copying the image (and, if necessary, using Control-A to copy everything) from a "draft" post. Then "lift" the image by cutting it from the draft. Paste that onto the permanent post you want to make.

Hmmm. When you say, "copying the image from a "draft" post," how do I get an image in the draft? Oh, and I have no "in-line attachment" option anyway.

This is what I tried: The pic I want to post is on my computer. When I open it, I selected Copy, but I can't paste it into the draft. I also clicked on the little picture frame icon, but it only asks for a web link.

Posting pics used to be so easy. Now everythings gone. Unimpressed

Re: FAQ with Avatar and Posting pictures. [In reply to] Reply With Quote Reply To Topic

I was referring to copying images from somewhere online, then pasting it into something that you could use as a "draft," such as the "messages" at the top of the Forum page.

Often, it won't copy from somewhere on your computer. Too bad.

In my opinion, the forum software is a mess and should be replaced/upgrdaded. Dunno whether the admins have the time to do so though.

Yea!! It worked! For future reference I'll say what I did.

I found a picture on the Internet similar to the one I have on my PC. I was then able to Copy & Past it into the draft post. But in order to see it in the Preview I had to type in "image" in brackets on top of the pic. At first I thought I had to type in /image at the bottom of the pic but it turned out to be unnecessary.
