I can only recall bits and pieces of this old show I remember but it involved these large birds not unlike a chocobo from the final fantasy video games. One of them may have been wearing a helmet and there may have been different factions gearing up for a war of some sort. It was a hand drawn animation and was probably a special of some sort. I also think it would have aired on PBS or Reading Rainbow or something since I grew up without cable TV. It's driving me crazy trying to remember anything else about it. If anyone has any clues about what it might be, I would love to hear them.
P.S. There may have been other talking creatures in the cartoon but I can't be sure.

The only thing I can think of that sounds even remotely like what you're describing is Barnyard Commandos, a syndicated mini-series based on a short-lived line of toys, but there weren't any birds in that; just warring factions of pigs and sheep.
Although this series focus is mainly on small forest mammals, (primarily rodents such as mice, rats, moles voles, and shrews), the feathered community did make an appearence in the series. (Sparrows, ravens, magpies, and owls)

not redwall, this is driving me nuts haha any combo of modifiers I try in google usually leads to angry birds or chocobos in images. These birds were larger than humans in the animated short, I know this is quite vague and I appreciate the effort.

Oh, then I'm thinking of a different show. I was talking about a show where these guys rode ostriches and they had Army Helmets and the leader's ostrich had a barret.
