"Cars" sets record in China for animated film
|

Pixar-Disney's "Cars" premiered this weekend in China at $1.2 million, topping the box office and setting a record for the biggest opening of any animated film in that country. The CG-animated motor saga also opened in first place in Italy at $5.2 million, making it the country's fourth-largest market opening for an animated film. Cars opened at #1 in Norway as well. Cars is scheduled to open in Sweden and Denmark this coming weekend. Overseas, Cars was #3 overall this past weekend, collecting $9.6 million in 35 countries. The film's overseas gross now stands at $157.6 million. The partly animated Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties was in fourth place, drawing $7.2 million in 20 countries. Its overseas total is now $77.6 million. In fifth place was Monster House, which bringing in an estimated $5.8 million from 24 countries for an overseas total of $29.1 million.
