    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    BCDB Hits 150K Entries

    It took a while, but we are finally here! The Big Cartoon DataBase hit the milestone of 150,000 entries earlier today with the addition of the cartoon The Polish Language. This film was added to BCDB on May 9th, 2014 at 4:23 PM.

    Funnyman Will Ferrell and partner Adam McKay are working on bringing back everyone’s favorite stone-age family. The duo’s production company Gary Sanchez Productions is in development on a new Flintstones animated feature.

    Disney To Feast In France

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

Ten Animated Series That Should Be On DVD.

    There are ten underrated animated series that should be on DVD:

    10. "Dodo, The Kid From Outer Space." One of the best cartoons produced by Halas And Batchelor. I believe one episode's on a compilation disc of sci-fi cartoons. So why not the whole series?

    9. "The Funny Company." An early educational cartoon from 1963. A group of kids hang out in a clubhouse, and learn about the world around them. They're joined by Dr. Todd Goodheart, and the Native Americans Super Chief and Broken Feather, plus mascot Terry Dactyl. Halfway through each episode, their computer Wisenheimer would show live action films devoted to everything from judo to space travel training. This deserves a place on DVD.

    8. "Bailey's Comets." About a roller derby team seeking a million dollar prize. Along with several rival teams, they travelled stateside and globally to find their objective.

    7. "The Smokey The Bear Show." Years before "Captain Planet," and even "Yogi's Gang," there was this show that had a very evident ecological theme.

    6. "The Big World Of Little Adam." Devoted to space exploration. Yes, it's dated, but still memorable for the lessons it taught.

    5. "The Wonderful World Of Professor Kitzel." More animated/live action education, compliments of Shamus Culhane.

    4. "Lassie's Rescue Rangers." Here, Lassie, her human owners the Turner family, Native American teenager Gene Fox, and a group of wild animals performed daring rescues not only in their own territory, but in the big city, Alaska, and elsewhere. One truly memorable episode had Team Lassie digging into a prison yard across the border to rescue an imprisoned doctor. And at the end of each episode, Jackie and Lassie provided first aid and safety tips.

    3. "Max, The 2000 Year Old Mouse." This series was another devoted to historical figures.

    2. Tie: "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" and "Fantastic Voyage." Both produced by Filmation. Unfortunately 20th Century Fox owns the rights to these, so DVD releases are unlikely.

    1. The Lone Ranger." This series from 1966 was clearly inspired by "The Wild, Wild West," and the adventures were totally suspenseful. All this from Format Films, which also produced the first Alvin And The Chipmunks cartoons.

    Regarding to your next to last request, Shout! Factory does have a deal with Fox. Mayhaps you can ask them to sublicense Journey To The Center Of The Earth and Fantastic Voyage from Fox. ;)

    The Fantastic Voyage animated series has been released on DVD in the UK. You can order it from amazon.co.uk for about six pounds (plus shipping).

    Now that Disney own Lucasfilm, I'm surprised they haven't gotten around to giving these the deluxe DVD treatment yet. They will surely come sooner or later.

    3. King Kong Show/Tom of THUMB. A few episodes were released on DVD but not the complete series

    I remember Sport Billy airing on the USA Network's "Cartoon Express" circa 1983-84. Now knowing that it was a Filmation production, I wonder how it ended up there, since the "Cartoon Express" was most;y Hanna-Barbera cartoons (and in those years mostly ones from the mid-1970's).
