Red-haired boy (Nikolai?) and his dog goes on adventures. (Denmark, 1980s?)

I know that this will be a long shot, but I hope that someone here will be able to give me some more information about an old cartoon series, that I used to watch back in 1989 when I was five years old. I recorded one episode on an old VHS tape, and that is why I can give you so many details. Based on snippets of text from the ending credits, my theory is that the cartoon is Danish or maybe Norwegian.

As you can tell from the title of the thread, it is about a red-haired boy. He also has glasses, pink shirt and blue pants. His name (at least in the Swedish dubbing) is Nikolai and his best friend is a big orange dog. In the one episode, that I recorded back then , they visit a scientist's house and accidentally use a time machine, so they go back to the time of the three musketeers. And I know that this was twentysix years ago, and I was only five years old, but I can swear that I also remember a different episode, where the same boy goes to Atlantis. And all the people had become mermen and mermaids, who had been able to survive under water for thousands of years.

Do you have any ideas at all?

Based on some of your details (orange dog, pink shirt), I take it the show wasn't a European dubbing of Peabody's Improbable History? Some of the other details seemed to fit. Mister Peabody - Wikipedia

Hi! I did a Google search for pictures from "Mister Peabody", and that boy looks a lot like the boy from my mystery cartoon. The dog is not similar though.

Okay, could his name be not Nikolai, but Peter? There's an old Hungarian cartoon series featuring a red-haired boy with glasses named "Peti" ("Peter" in both English and Swedish), and his orange daschund. In the early episodes, Peter was bald with just some hairy spikes on his head, but in the later, he was given a hair. There's an episode called "Peter and the Time Machine" (Hungarian: "Peti és az időgép"), but unfortunately, this episode is nowhere to find...

That is not it either, unfortunately. But I can see some similarities with "my" cartoon.

When I get my VCR working, I will try to make a screen shot from "my" cartoon. Maybe that is enough to jog somebody's memory.

It's based on the "Nikolajs hemmelige liv" books by the Danish cartoonist Werner Wejp-Olsen.



Apparently, there was at least one cartoon short of Nikolaj on YouTube, but it was removed since, leaving only a tiny preview thumbnail
