    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Can't argue with your choices. Valerie was smart and calm under pressure when coming up with ways to battle the power-mad villains the Pussycats group faced.

    Agreed, especially for the period: late Sixties to early Seventies. Of course, at the time, there was some pressure by the Feds to break the lily-white monopoly of cartoon characters, which extended to all the major studios. Hanna-Barbera saw a chance to meet this criterion when their character designer, Iwao Takamoto, tweaked the characters that Hanna-Barbera had leased from Archie Comics. Josie was fine as is, so was Melody. Originally, the third Pussycat was Pepper, a white girl with glasses and bookworm tendencies. It was decided that Pepper would be replaced by Valerie Brown, to meet the African criterion. Naturally, the character's role didn't need much change: namely, the girl MacGyver of the group. Further, Alexandra Cabot started in the comics as a bobbed brunette. Takamoto realized that the Token Evil Teammate needed a better signifier, something to avoid Brunettes Are Evil. Thus, Alexandra gained her iconic Skunk Stripe.

    At first, Archie Comics bristled at the idea of reworking the Pepper character. However, Hanna-Barbera liked how very well set up the characters were for the story lines and comic mechanisms they'd scripted, so the studio remained adamant about converting to Valerie. It's likely that the Feds also visited Archie Comics with insistence on "coloring" their world. Ultimately, Josie and the Pussy Cats went forward as planned, and made a significant impact on the cartoon landscape. In fact, Archie Comics was compelled by the success of the cartoon to RetCon their Josie series to jibe with the animated version. Pepper got Put On A Bus, and Valerie auditioned to be the third Pussycat.

    Might I add Buckwheat from The Little Rascals. Unlike the original theatrical shorts, Hanna-Barbera's version cast Buckwheat as a gadgeteer and as Porky's interpreter. From scavenged components he built such things as a firefly-powered flashlight, a yacht-cleaning robot, a baby carriage with a gramophone mounted on the front, and a telescoping arm for changing the channel on an analog TV set.

    Both characters are voiced by the same actor Shavar Ross (who also played Arnold's best friend Dudley on "Diff'rent Strokes").

    Eugene in the live-action "Mork and Mindy" sitcom was played by Jeffrey Jacquet.
    Jacquet later starred in the series "Whiz Kids" that lasted one season on CBS.

    Cyborg from the Superpowers team should also be included. I personally think that is the best animated version of Cyborg.

    And don't forget Buckwheat's "Brush Off" was ready for action in "Cap'n Spanky's Showboat". His creation was operated by Pete while viewing a picture of a bone on a black background, causing Pete to create energy, and allow a series of three paintbrushes on a platform to move back and forth. I also recall Buckwheat using a bicycle pump to push to get the task completed.
