    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Here's an interesting bit of Anime (and cartoon) history.
    It goes under the title Kobu-Tori, and it's mostly based around old Japanese myths. Characters like Tengu make appearances in it.

    I like the art style used for it. It's like a mix between Ukiyo-e and the old silent Felix the Cat shorts.

    Well, 1929 would have been before the major stylistic influence of Disney really took hold, since that was in the post WW II years. It does seem to be a much more realistic style, something much closer to the work of Winsor McCay and other draftsmen. Also has a very rotoscoped feel to it, although I wonder if that process was known in Japan as early as 1929.

    I did try to research a bit on it, looking to see who the animators were and if they had any other works, but I couldn't find anything. It's possible that there might've been more of these shorts out there, but they're gone now. Many things were lost during World War II. I did find a short from 1933 which was more simplistic in the art style. Very much like Bosko and Felix. It even had sound to it. I'll get some screen caps later for reference. But that's more likely a thread of it's own.

    I was amazed out how well I could follow that without being able to read Japanese. That was also heavily entertaining in spite of that too, mostly due to the really likeable animation.
