    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

    ~ Howdy, Folks!

Anybody out there got a favorite Disney Christmas cartoon? Disney came back to this theme over and over so there is a lot to choose from. One of my favorites is an early Silly Symphonie, "Santa's Workshop" (1932).

    Some good ones are,

    Mickey's Christmas Carol
    Pluto's Christmas Tree
    The Night Before Christmas

This has to do more with winter than Christmas, but I like Donald's Snow Fight.

Here's another good Christmas cartoon from Disney. A Silly Symphonie from December 1933, "The Night Before Christmas". Enjoy!

Forgot this one! Donald has his hands full with Chip and Dale in this Christmas flavored cartoon. "Corn Chips" (1951). Enjoy!

Here is one of my favorite Christmas cartoons from Disney. Chip in Dale in 1949's "Toy Tinkers". Enjoy!

My favorites are all Donald Duck cartoons:

    Donald's Snow Fight (1942)
    The Hockey Champ (1939)

There's also one in which Donald is employed at a department store as a gift-wrapper, but the title escapes me.

I have to say I'm not a big fan of "Pluto's Christmas Tree"... the pacing is too fast in some places and the main-title music is just a boring string of traditional tunes strung together.

That would be The Clock Watcher. I haven't seen that one in a looong time.

    Yes, that's the one.

I just remembered that I have a Disney DVD that pairs "The Small One" with "Mickey's Christmas Carol" (and, it also has "Pluto's Christmas Tree") The first film is from the late 70's and is one of the productions that Don Bluth worked on before striking out on his own. The animation is what you would expect from Disney and the story is engaging. It's also great to hear Thurl Ravenscroft among the vocalists in at least one of the songs. "Mickey's Christmas Carol" is a nice spin on the Dickens story; much better than in "Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales", which placed Yosemite Sam in the role with mixed results.

Agreed... Don Bluth did some fine work at Disney and represents one of the best products of the new generation of animators/directors emerging in the the 1970's. I love Thurl Ravenscroft and his voice work. Instantly recognizable and always memorable. The later Warner Brothers efforts from the same era just don't cut it in my own humble opinion.

I have to go with Mickey's Christmas Carol as my favorite.
