    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    One problem is restricting the list to only 10 cartoons. Plus, with the exception of 2, the rest are all directed by Chuck Jones,no room for any of Bugs' match-ups with, say,Yosemite Sam.And there has to be some noteworthy films from Clampett or McKimson.

    That'll happen. In Bugs's first few cartoons, he's a trickster / prankster / pest who may or may not get a comeuppance. These'd be the Avery and Clampett cartoons. But Freleng and Jones realized that Bugs could easily slip into a Scrappy Sue character, so they created specialized antagonists to earn Bugs's wrath. Freleng created Yosemite Sam as the loud, obnoxious, ornery braggart that merits Bugs Bunny treatment. Jones also made sure the Bunny was the everyman beset by some self-important menace, so Bugs's trickery would be justified. There's a reason that Bugs Bunny supplanted Daffy Duck as the studio's figurehead.

    The challenge (futility?) of a Top Ten Bugs list is proof of the rabbit's incredible versatility. Whether it was an enduring nemesis like Elmer Fudd or a one-off antagonist like Nero Lion in Acrobatty Bunny, Bugs response to each and every adversary was always appropriate and pitch-perfect (esp. in the case of Giovanni Jones).
