You WIll Need To Reset Your Password!!!

We just moved hosts on this system, and this has caused a few updates. One is the way we encode and store the encoded passwords.

Your old passwords will NOT work. You will need to reset your password. This is normal. Just click on reset password from the log in screen. Should be smooth as silk to do...

    Sorry for the hassle.

    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

Here's a thread on how to know who animated what, in early HB. Frankly, anything after 1963, I have no way of knowing all of them, but you can feel free to add.

    (1) Kenneth Muse---He animated most of the "pilot" or "intro" episodes of series (but not all). His was basic straightforward animation, nothing fancy....when the mouth moves, you see one set of top teeth (like one long tooth) and tongue shows a slit in the middle.

    (2) Lew(is) Marshall----His animation is easy to spot....when the mouth moves, the nose of the character bobs up and down.

    (3) Carlo Vinci---the "wild man" of HB. His was more limited animation than the others. Arms and legs twist when the character moves. The hair swings back and forth. The mouth movements are the most telling. Even when the mouth is closed, the character looks like he/she is snarling. The teeth grit often. Another site said, when you hear Yogi Bear doing the famous "boink walk" (with sound effect), that's Carlo.

    (4) George Nicholas----prominent tongue, no slit.

    (5) Ed Love---early on in his HB work, the mouth showed "individual teeth"....but I think from Top Cat on, he may have been told to ditch the teeth thing. I had no idea that Ed Love did certain TC episodes, because I was thinking "Where were the teeth?"

    (6) Jack Ozark---seemingly he only did Loopy de Loop & some Flintstones. The eyes look sad all the time, even when the characters look happy!

    (7) Michael Lah----very limited mouth movement...hard to explain here. He may have been the one to fill in animation in spots on early HB, despite one other animator getting all the credit---but don't quote me here.

Any other animators' traits to log here, or any corrections to mine?

    ~ Howdy, Dave!

That's a real perceptive analysis of the various HB animator's traits you have put together. And your descriptions are right on. I can see the various styles in my minds eye. In addition to the various animators I find some of the design work done by Doug Widley, on Jonny Quest for example, to be really facinating.

Lah did uncredited footage on cartoons in the first season. Here's one of his takes from "The Ghost With the Most."

Carlo loved a big bar of teeth in the earliest cartoons. He toned it down later. Here's an example from "The Stout Trout," a nice little spot gag cartoon.

Muse has a partial row of upper teeth and a little tongue that moves around.

I can just picture in my mind who animated what thanks to your description of the animators styles :)
Very interesting the different styles. I will have to try it myself. I'm a n00b when it comes to animation, but I enjoy the hobby. I use pencils, no computers. Thanks for the very interesting OP in this thread :D

Dave was talking about Lah's limited mouth movement. Lah used to slide the mouth around on the face and make odd shapes with it. His eyes shapes were unique; he liked conjoint eyes, especially. You can see the same thing in his work at MGM in the later years.

Alex Toth. Unlike most character designers, he strove to make the characters look as realistic as possible. Neither the heroes nor the villains had exaggerated features. He also resisted making alien and mutant villains partly human. They were what they were.
