    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Now that I've said more than enough about Hanna-Barbera cartoons, I decided to post my thoughts about cartoons from other studios besides them, Disney, and Warner Bros.

    And what better one to begin with than "Star Trek: The Animated Series" from Filmation?

    Although I've never been a bona fide Trekkie, I just had to see what the actors from the original show could pull off in a cartoon. And I was very impressed. I only saw a few episodes, but that was enough for me to see the animated series was on equal ground with the live action show. Each episode was well-written and acted. And the addition of Lt. Arex, Lt. M'Ress, and some others added more diversity. Noting that Chekhov was conspicuously absent, I thought, "He's just hanging out in another part of the ship." Had I written the cartoons, he'd have been there, since I like things to be all-inclusive.

    The dialogue alone made me realize this wasn't just another Saturday morning cartoon, and others who saw it obviously thought so, too, for the episode "Yesteryear" earned the series an Emmy. Best of all, guests from the original like Stanley Adams as Cyrano Jones, Mark Lenard as Sarek, and Roger C. Carmel as Harry Mudd were brought back for this version. And although it was accomplished with the second movie, I say there should have been an animated sequel to "Space Seed," complete with Ricardo Montalban voicing an animated Khan. Wouldn't that have been something?

    I like most Filmation cartoons, and this one gets a 10+.

    Walter Koenig, who played Chekov, did not perform in the "Star Trek" cartoons but did contribute a story.

    DC Fontana, who wrote several episodes for the live action "Star Trek", wrote several "Star Trek" cartoon episodes to add to the faithfulness of the concept. The Hologram recreational deck aboard the cartoon Enterprise was re-created in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" series.

    James Doohan played Scotty and many other character voices in the "Star Trek" cartoons including the three armed helmsman Mr. Arex and many aliens, hostile and friendly. Majel Barrett, who played Nurse Chapel and was Mrs. Gene Roddenberry, played the voices of the feline Lt. M'Ress and the Enterprise computer and other alien character voices.

    Ted Knight, who played Ted Baxter on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and was a performer on several Filmation animated series, played Captain Robert April, the Enterprise captain before Captain Kirk, on one episode.

    A little talky for the Saturday Morning younger viewers but the stories and voice performances were excellent...the animation was "typical Filmation" with repeated character designs, backgrounds, and the Enterprise orbiting the same area in space...but it was enough to tell the stories effectively.

    Filmation cartoons rank as some of my favorites. I have not watched the Star Trek cartoon in ages but liked how Filmation always made their cartoons seem kid friendly yet grown-up at the same time.

    Yes, Filmation have a good recrd. I didn't realise they were behind Star Trek: The Animated Series!
