    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

Despicable Me 2 edges out Monsters University, imo. But I didn't get to see The Wind Rises, so that may be better than either.

Don't count out Disney's Frozen for an Annie. I think I know how the judges look at these films, and there are quite a few appealing filmmaking mechanisms within Frozen to tickle their fancy.

Yeah, I think the Annie judges are more biased toward Pixar and DreamWorks in most cases. As I've said before, they also show no love for Looney Tunes...

Color me completely surprised that so far Frozen has won both the Golden Globe and Critic's Choice awards. To be honest though, I don't think this past year's crop of animated features was really a very strong field.

Pure speculation here, but I'm thinking that Frozen is benefiting from the pigeonholed villain mechanism. We've seen it with the titular Megamind, cordoned into the dark side when he couldn't compete with young Metro Man. Megamind didn't aim to be evil at the outset, it's just that supervillainy was the only workable outlet to his creativity. And Gru from Despicable Me wanted to be a moon-stealing supervillain, until adoptive fatherhood showed him there was so much more to life than accolades. Heck, even Doctor Doom started out the victim of a heartless monarchy that burned his mother as a witch, and hunted down his father for failing to cure a nobleman's ward. Victor von Doom took the feudal Latveria out of the medieval malaise and into the modern world. Doom acts as he must, because he believes such is his destiny.

So, here with Frozen, we are presented with another "villain" who isn't wicked or malicious. She's been shunned and marginalized for her powers, and has had to become, in effect, a nation of one. Like anyone would, when driven to desolation and desperation, she adapted to her environment. It makes for a touching story to try and fish someone like that back from the abyss. So, guilt-ridden heroine undertakes the quest to connect with a pigeonholed antagonist: good storycraft has a way of getting noticed.
