    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

A Little Kwicky.

    And now, my thoughts on "The Kwicky Koala Show."

    This joint effort from Hanna-Barbera and Tex Avery was delayed for a year due to Mr. Avery's death in 1980. But it was worth the wait. Kwicky always got away from Wilfrid Wolf by moving rapidly from one place to another. And HB never ignored the fact that koalas feed only on eucalyptus leaves-- Kwicky always had a eucalyptus tree in his yard, or other access to the leaves. I really liked that HB was able to give credit where credit was due by putting "Created By Tex Avery" on the title cards. Most amusing was the episode when Wilfrid decided to go after Kwicky upon learning the three little pigs had moved to a condo in Malibu. The reason? He discovered koalas have a porklike flavor. There was also one that had him resisting the urge to eat the koala, even though he was starving. Then an avalanche brought them into the village, where there just happened to be a fast-food place. So the wolf got himself a hearty meal, and forgot all about Kwicky. Yippee!

    "The Bungle Brothers." George and Joey kept trying for a showbiz career, but, judging from what I saw, neither had much talent. They'd have failed miserably on today's reality shows.

    "Crazy Claws." Never saw this character and his co-stars, aside from the intro.

    "Dirty Dawg." I did see at least one episode of this segment, but that was all.

    I can't understand why this series was cancelled after just one season. Maybe viewers were disappointed that Kwicky was pursued by a wolf instead of a dingo. Maybe they realized they'd seen it all before in other H-B shows. Or perhaps they were tired of Tex Avery's style by then. If that were the case, they were ignoring the work of a gifted man. All things considered, I give this one a three-star rating.

    Trivia Question 34: What treat did Rawhide Clyde give Bristletooth, or at least promise him if he defeated Crazy Claws?

    Answer: Beef jerky.

    "Dirty Dawg" dealt with a homeless fast talking pooch (voiced by Frank Welker sounding like sportscaster Howard Cosell) and his rat pal Ratso (Marshall Efron) trying to stay one step ahead of a determined and often frustrated city cop Officer Bullhorn (Matthew Faison) in a big city. Dirty Dawg and Ratso tried to sweet talk or played con games on their victims in order to get a meal or get some spare change...and sometimes helping others in trouble out of genuine concern. Rather resonating, given the state of the economy of late. A "Top Cat" clone, only Dirty Dawg and Ratso looked a lot more scruffier and unwashed.

    "Crazy Claws" dealt with a Groucho Marx-like witty wildcat (voiced by Jim MacGeorge) who usually tangled with trapper Rawhide Clyde (Don Messick) and his wacky dog Bristletooth (Peter Cullen) in a big national park (not Jellystone Park, though).
    A recurring gag re-used the Quick Draw McGraw/Snuffles the dog gag of Clyde bribing Bristletooth with some beef jerky to help with another plan to catch Crazy Claws...after Clyde convinces Bristletooth to help him out, Clyde would give Bristletooth the beef jerky and the dog hugs himself and floats up and down in the air when he tastes it. Fussy Park Ranger Rangerfield (Michael Bell) would appear to keep order in the park and explained a few things about the miracles of nature (photosynthesis, taking care of flower and trees and the environment). Crazy Claws offered some great wisecracks and one-liners whenever Clyde's plans to catch him backfired or when Ranger Rangerfield gets irritated by Crazy and Clyde's antics or when Ranger Rangerfield's nature lectures get a little too wordy.

    "The Bungle Brothers" appeared in short bumpers between cartoons with short, slobbering George (Michael Bell) and burly and not-too-bright Joey (Allen Melvin) performing acrobatic tricks without much success.

    "Kwicky Koala" had the timid-sounding Kwicky (Robert Allen Ogle who also wrote many cartoon stories for DePatie Freleng) avoiding wily Wilfred Wolf (John Stephenson, sounding like Mildew Wolf from "Laff-a-Lympics") with bursts of unexpected speed. The timing seems a little off in the comedy (Kwicky disappearing from sight as Wilfred attempts to grab him and then panning to Kwicky nonchalantly walking away a distance from where Wilfred is standing). Kwicky never lost his composure or changed his deadpan facial expression (like Droopy Dog) through it all. Bob Ogle later used the same Kwicky voice as Digger Mole in "The Shirt Tales".

    Tex Avery worked for Hanna-Barbera in not only creating "Kwicky Koala" but also the "Dino and Cavemouse" episodes for the 1980 "Flintstones Comedy Show" for NBC before his death.

    Pleasant attempt by H-B to create new animal characters in short cartoons...but not as long-lasting in memory. I liked "Crazy Claws" the best and "Dirty Dawg" had a few charming stories as well.

    Ah yes, Kwicky--I used to think he was adorable! I used to see a few shorts with the little guy in "Toon Extra" which usually consisted of a Hanna Barbara short such as Lippy and Hardy, Wally Gator, Touche Turtle or Kwicky Koala squeezed in between shows.

    I will admit though, while the little guy was cute, polite and sweet--there wasn't much else to him--except for his rather unexplanable almost supernatural power of disappearing just in the nick of time from Wilfred Wolf. Having a huge love for animals (another one of my interests besides cartoons) I was a bit confused as to why a wolf was chasing after a koala as wolves are not native to Australia--a dingo would have worked better. Also, I think due to Avery's death shortly after creating the character was why I didn't really see much Avery-like over the top gags and violence like in his earlier work.

    There was a really funny CN bumper that I found online--never saw it on tv, that featured various cartoon characters phoning in sick to a live action secretary (nobody was actually sick--they just wanted the day off to play golf or other various activities) In the end--a disgruntled little boy--who most likely also stayed home feigning sickness is watching a 24 hour Kwicky Koala marathon as he was the only character to not take the day off.

    Kwicky sounded like Bill Thompson as Droopy the Dog----no surprise there, as creator Tex Avery created both, and both Wilford and Mildew sounded like Paul Lynde, who originated the voice, needed to be sure. The Bungle Bros.were a dog based Of Mice and Men take off. Crazy Claws sounded like Groucho Marx and the trapper like Mel Blanc as Yosemite Sam!!
