Cartoon Versions Of Chemical Elements

Tired of the same old periodic table? Want to breathe some fresh air into the stale old chemicals? That’s is exactly what animator and illustrator Kaycie D. decided to take on a massive character design project. In her thesis project– titled Elements – Experiments in Character Design- at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Kaycie decided she would design a character based on each of the known chemical elements in the periodic table, until she had a complete world of science-inspired cartoon characters.

The idea sprang from Kaycie D.‘s chemistry classes. One class showed a video in which the narrator personified some of the elements, and this little spart struck a chord in her mind. She began drawing different elements as human characters and developing back stories for them. She decided to expand on that passion for her thesis, taking a characteristic of each element, or the story behind the element’s name, and creating a character based on that.

In the resulting work, some of the elements are suit-wearing scientists or characters from Greek mythology, but many of them are fantastical heroes and villains. Her next step? Kaycie D. may decide to write full stories for each of her special characters.
