    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Funnyman Will Ferrell and partner Adam McKay are working on bringing back everyone’s favorite stone-age family. The duo’s production company Gary Sanchez Productions is in development on a new Flintstones animated feature.

    Disney To Feast In France

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

Five animated films up for France's Cesar Awards

    Five nominees in the Best Animated Film category were announced Friday for the César Awards, France's equivalent of the Oscars.

    They include both feature films and short subjects.

    The five hopefuls are Edmond était un ane (dir. Franck Dion; prod. Francine Langdeau), Ernest et Célestine (dir. Benjamin Renner, Vincent Patar and Stéphane Aubier; prod. Didier Brunner and Henri Magalon), Kirikou et les hommes et les femmes (dir. Michel Ocelot; prod. Didier Brunner), Oh Willy... (dir. Emma de Swaef and Marc Roels; prod. Nidia Santiago) and Zarafa (dir. Rémi Bezançon and Jean-Christophe Lie; prod. Valérie Schermann and Christophe Jankovic).

    Edmond était un ane (Edmond Was a Donkey), a 14-minute film, was co-produced -- and distributed -- by the National Film Board of Canada. It recently was nominated for this year's Canadian Screen Award for Best Animated Short.

    For Best Film, the nominees are Les Adieux a la reine (dir. Benoit Jacquot), Amour (Michael Haneke), Camille Redouble (Noémie Lvovsky), Dans la maison (François Ozon), De Rouille et d'os (Jacques Audiard), Holy Motors (Leos Carax) and Le Prénom (Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière).

    Best Foreign Film nominees are À Perdre la raison (Our Children; Belgium; Joachim Lafosse), Argo (U.S.A.; Ben Affleck), Bullhead (Belgium; Michael R. Roskam), Laurence Anyways (Canada; Xavier Dolan), Oslo, 31 aout (Oslo, August 31st; Norway; Joachim Trier), La Part des anges (The Angels' Share; United Kingdom; Ken Loach) and A Royal Affair (Denmark; Nikolaj Arcel).

    Camille Redouble (Camille Rewinds) leads with 13 nominations, followed by Amour with 10.

    César Award winners will be named February 22 in Paris, just two days before the Oscars in Los Angeles.
