    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    With all this talk about Gone With The Wind, how many cartoons have quoted from this film and used some scenes in this?

    Can't be that many. Gone With The Wind was produced through MGM Studios, so it'd be a Fred Quimby for MGM cartoon that'd tap Wind for pithy quotes. In contrast, the Looney Tunes are Warner Brothers, as is Casablanca. That's why the Tunes mine Bogart for quotes: he's a "house" property. It's kind of an unwritten rule of the film industry: never so much as mention another studio's work. Pretend your competitors don't exist, unless it's for snide derision. Among MGM cartoons, Tom And Jerry rarely speak, so we can preclude them. Droopy Dog? Doubtful, as Droopy's not a pithy character. Best bet is Screwy Squirrel, but I can't cite anything offhand. Possibly a Spumco or some other indie production studio that doesn't have an iconic film library to mine for quotes, and must perforce "borrow" from Wind or other memorable films.

    I have one...in a Pinky and the Brain ep, Pinky as Scarlett asks Brain "what shall I do"? The Brain as Rhett says "frankly, I don't give a-"...just before he says the infamous line, Brain would later say "poo".
