    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Funnyman Will Ferrell and partner Adam McKay are working on bringing back everyone’s favorite stone-age family. The duo’s production company Gary Sanchez Productions is in development on a new Flintstones animated feature.

    Disney To Feast In France

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Classic cartoons from 1900 to 1955 will be presented Saturday, October 9 in Rome, New York as part of a program on the art of the animated film.

    The program will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the historic Capitol Theatre, 220 West Dominick Street, with a repeat screening at 7 p.m.

    Capitol director Art Pierce says that the show was especially compiled for the theater. The first part will feature silent cartoons from 1900 to 1927, with live theatre organ accompaniment by Avery Tunningley. Sound cartoons from 1928 to 1955 will be featured in the second part.

    Works of historic importance in the first part will be the partially animated film The Enchanted Drawing; 1906's Humorous Phases of Funny Faces, generally considered to be the first film containing drawn animation; two of the early Disney "Alice" cartoons, depicting the a live-action girl's adventures in an animated world; and a "Ko-Ko the Clown" cartoon from the Fleischer Brothers.

    Part 2 starts off with Disney's first sound cartoon, Steamboat Willie with Mickey Mouse. It goes on to showcase such acclaimed shorts as the surrealistic Bimbo's Initiation, co-starring an early version of Betty Boop; the early color film Balloonland, by Disney disciple Ub Iwerks; A Wild Hare, the first "official" Bugs Bunny cartoon; and works by such animators as Tex Avery and Chuck Jones.

    All the films will be shown in 35mm prints on the Capitol's 18-foot-high screen.

    Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and students, and $2 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at the door.
