    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

We've got a thread dedicated to spanking, one dedicated to roasting rumps, but one key butt joke is missing: the old needle gag!

And boy, are there tons of that one. Most famous might be Donald Duck, who's rump gets pestered by Spike the Bee more often than not, but this theme is found in many, many other cartoons as well. I'll just post a few to get us started, I'm sure you know more!

First up is Tom and Jerry with "The Midnight Snack". This was the second Tom and Jerry Cartoon ever (after "Puss gets the boot"... can you see the pattern?). After being abused by Tom all night, Jerry finally gets a chance for a little payback when Tom gets his tail stuck in a foldable ironing board! Obviously, Jerry cannot believe his luck as he sets off to choose a nice fork to pester Toms posterior with, smiling all the time. Tom meanwhile doesn't look as happy.

Jerry then gets comfortable right on the rump of his rival, making the most out of the moment. Kinkily, he takes his time to draw a nice little mark on Toms bottom - X marks the spot! [IMG]

Now, I can't continue this topic without talking about one of the best rivalries in classic cartoons: Donald Duck vs. Spike the Bee.

In the Episode "Window Cleaners", Donald first pesters Spike, but he turns out to be more than capable of defending himself, finally throwing Donald off-balance. The hapless Duck ends up tied up and helpless, with his inviting rear end sticking out. Spike knows an opportunity when he sees one, and goes in for the sting, but Donald tries to blow him away. They both end up completely exhausted, and Spike collapses - only to find himself in quite the advantageous position! Dedicated to the task at hand, he starts another attempt at delivering his stinger into Donalds posterior - and finally, after timing Donalds' breathing, he gets it right.

OK, last up is Rock-A-Bye Bear, from the great Tex Avery. A dog is hired to watch a bear's house while he hibernates. Meanwhile, Spike the dog tries his best to get the bear to wake up - and what better way than making the other dog yelp?

The cartoon starts off with a lot of dogs in the pound. The owner tries to pick out a dog for the task at hand, but they all cower in a corner. To end this stalemate, Spike produces a long needle and pokes the unlucky other dog in the rear, making him jump out of the crowd.

Some time later, the brown dog tries to find some peace and quiet, but Spike isn't having any of that! While the dog tries to sit down, Spike smilingly places his trusty needle smack in the middle of the seat. This gets the job done AND reminds the other dog of the previous humiliation at the same time! Ouch!

Another one came to mind today: Cueball Cat, als with Tom & Jerry. In it, Tom and Jerry chase each other in a pool hall. It all culminates with Jerry hiding in the billiard table, while Tom tries to poke him out with a cue. While he's busy thrusting the cue into the table, Jerry hitches a ride on the cue and emerges behind him... along with a few choice items! Jerry musters Toms backside with a mischievous laugh before fastening the needle on the cue. He carefully lines up the shot, baits Tom and then watches as he puts all his might into poking his own bottom!

Hey, I can post markups again! Here's the one I wanted to post for the last one:

Aaand while I'm at it, here's another one: Baby Puss, another Tom & Jerry Cartoon.

What makes this one special is that it's not Jerry delivering the abuse... instead, a trio of cats find Tom dressed up like a baby and decide to have a little fun with him. Of course, this leads up to a mischievous diaper change (and a brilliant musical number, but that one doesn't belong in this topic).

At first, Tom is delivered to the changing table via express. The facial expressions tell the whole story, as the black cat giddily checks out Toms fanny while strapping on a mask - time to get to work! After administering a light sedative (applied with a hammer to the forehead) Tom is freed from the wet diaper. Then, his bottom gets powdered and oiled thoroughly. Last but not least, the new diaper has to be secured... but the way the safety pin is administered to Tom's poor rear shows a whole other intention! After another round of "anesthesia" the safety pin is removed from his fanny... and from the looks of it, the mischievous trio is quite satisfied with the result!

I thought of one. In The Scarlet Pumpernickel, Daffy poked himself in the rear with the "Ye Little Olympic High Jumper" (a needle) so he can jump over a wall.

Ah, here's an inverted one: from Josie And The Pussy Cats episode "Chili Today And Hot Tamale," Alexander, Melody and Alexandra are pursued by mooks into a bullfight arena. The hostile bull chases them, then singles out Alexandra, perhaps because of her red outfit. Alexandra escapes behind a safety barrier, which the bull crashes into, its horns punching through, pinning the bull in place. Glory hog that she is, Alexandra takes a bow to the crowd, forgetting the sharp horns behind her. She gets reminded, pointedly.

And we can count on good ol' Alexandra Cabot for more of this. Must be her calling or something. Perhaps this is why such characters are called buttmonkeys. This occurs in their first episide, "A Nemo's A No-No Affair," in which the sinister Captain Nemo uses his weird submarine with a huge drill bit on its prow to sink a freighter. Josie and company are aboard the freighter, and working kitchen duty in lieu of paying passage. Nemo's drill bit happens to poke through the hull precisely at the spot where Alexandra is supervising. The sharp drill tip motivates her into action.

Dave Hand tells the story of the problem he had with a butt joke when he was directing the Silly Symphony The Flying Mouse.

When the mouse tries to fly with a pair of leaves as wings, the wind carries him backwards onto a sharp rose thorn.

During the story meeting Hand didn't find the gag funny, especially in the context of the story: he just thought it was unnecessarily cruel. But it was an old standard joke, and Walt liked butt gags, so it remained on the storyboard. When he came to direct it, Hand complained again that it was not funny, and wanted to play it down. But Walt assured him that it would get a laugh and told him, "Oh, it’s a good one, Dave, you do it. Do it just the way we told it to you." So he set it all up as required: the big dark thorn prominent in the shot, the big impact and a shrieking crescendo in the music track. And the scene didn't get the promised laugh.

Hand felt his opposition had been vindicated, but Walt's reaction was frustration with Hand's direction: "Aww, Dave! You didn't do it right!"

Hand chalked it up as an example of Walt's sadistic streak, but I think I can see both sides. You can't "sell" a gag if you don't get it: Hand saw it as cruel rather than funny, and that's how it came out - heavy-handed (no pun intended!).

Oh, here's one with about sixteen pokes at once: from MGM's Tom and Jerry series "The Flying Cat" comes the scene where Tom has gained the power of flight, thanks to a corset working like a flying squirrel's airfoils. While pursuing both Jerry Mouse and that little yellow bird, the prey land on the birdhouse roof. There, the two pull on the eaves until the roof is detached. They toss the roof overhead, and leap into the remaining birdhouse, leaving the roof to flip in midair before settling into place upside-down, with sixteen or so carpentry nails pointing upward.

Tom sees the danger ahead, and tries to stop. While his corset airfoils make for workable air brakes, complete with rubber brake pad noise, Tom's speed is too great, and he collides with the inverted birdhouse roof and its pointy nails butt-first. The impact triggers such pain that Tom rebounds off the roof into a koi pond. Emerging from the pond, the many holes in Tom's derriere effectively water some flowers behind him.

That cat. That mouse. And O the mayhem. [banana]
