    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    On this day (November 18) in 1928, the first successful sound-synchronized animated cartoon, Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie, starring Mickey Mouse, premiered in New York.

    Steamboat Willie was originally a silent cartoon, released on July 29, 1928. Itwas the first of three Disney cartoons to which sound was added.

    This was not the first Mickey Mouse cartoon produced. It was the third! It was also the second Mickey Mouse cartoon released; Plane Crazy(as a silent cartoon) had a very limited release earlier in the year.

    Steamboat Willie was not (despite Disney claims otherwise) the first animated cartoon with sound -- or even with synchronized sound! There are other contenders:


    My Old Kentucky Home(Song Car-Tunes; Out of the Inkwell Films, 1926) was produced by Max Fleischer and featured Koko the Clown. It used an early Lee DeForest sound system for sound. Notes animation historian Ray Pointer: "My Old Kentucky Home appears to be the first attempt at animated dialogue, as the dog mouths 'Follow the ball, and join in, everybody' in remarkable synchronization. This comes two years before Disney's Steamboat Willie where the parrot squawks, and Mickey Mouse did not even speak until two years after that." [For the record, Mickey first speaks in 1929's The Karnival Kid. He says, "Hot dog!"]

    Dinner Time (Aesop's Fables; Van Beuren Studios) was the first cartoon originally produced and released as a sound cartoon. It premiered on July 1, 1928 at the Mark Strand Theater in New York. This cartoon used the RCA Photophone sound system. Walt Disney called the cartoon "a lot of racket and nothing else."

    Bosko The TalkInk Kid (Hugh Harman-Rudolf Ising Productions) was made in 1929, though never released theatrically. Producer-directors Hugh Harmon and Rudolf Ising shopped it around to various studio executives as a pilot for the Bosko character. This is possibly the first "talking cartoon" (as opposed to a cartoon with a soundtrack, as was the case with Steamboat Willie).


    Britain's first sound cartoon was The Jazz Stringer (British Sound Film Productions), which combined live action and animation. Made at Wembley Studios, it premiered at the Tivoli Cinema in the Strand (in London) on December 15, 1928.
