You WIll Need To Reset Your Password!!!

We just moved hosts on this system, and this has caused a few updates. One is the way we encode and store the encoded passwords.

Your old passwords will NOT work. You will need to reset your password. This is normal. Just click on reset password from the log in screen. Should be smooth as silk to do...

    Sorry for the hassle.

    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

Yes, folks, I'm talking about Top Cat, that adorable, money-hungry furball from the Big Apple, who's the only Hanna-Barbera character with the same initials as moi. But enough about that. I'll cut to the chase now.

I can't remember when I first saw Top Cat, let alone the first episode I saw. All I know is it was sometime during its Saturday morning run in the late '60's. And I was instantly taken with it. Although I liked all the characters, TC himself, Benny, and Officer Dibble are my top three.

Judging from what I saw, it was evident that all TC wanted was a better place than a trash can or alley. What cat wouldn't? Sure, his schemes were illegal, but I didn't care. However, each time he used the police phone, I thought, "TC. hang up that phone before Dibble catches you!"

I also commend HB for not making the mistake of depicting New York City as some paradise or Utopia. They presented it as the hotbed of crime that it was and still is in real life(I visited the Big Apple often throughout the '70's, but only did so when accompanied by others).

The show's opening and closing were also memorable. TC hitching a ride in a chauferred limo, pretending to pay the doorman, casually walking into an upscale bistro(and ignoring the dress code), and stealing a workman's lunch were all tipoffs to the nature of his business. Along with fleeing when the humans gave him dirty looks, and escaping in a taxi. The closing merely showed him sipping milk he stole from a milk truck, and getting ready for bed inside his trash can.

But, showing that you can't keep a good cat down, TC resurfaced several times in other HB series, specials, and made for TV movies. Most memorably as the boss on "Yogi's Treasure Hunt." Who better than he to send them off in search of treasure?

Finally, I'll never see the Top Cat movie that was filmed in Mexico, for I fear it'll let me down.

Trivia Question 63: Name the female cat who, along with her "guardians," set out to steal Benny's money.

When the BBC first aired Top Cat in the UK there was a popular cat food on sale by that name. Since the BBC could not appear to be advertising (the rules against advertising, especially in children's programming, were quite strict - brand names could not be shown or spoken) they renamed Top Cat as "Boss Cat". In the title sequence, when TC pulls down the blind with the title on the BBC cut to a title card reading Boss Cat. The show was listed as Boss Cat, and the continuity announcers had to introduce it as Boss Cat. But they made no attempt to change the soundtrack, so everyone knew it was just a charade.

Top Cat was on pretty often in my youth. While it changed often, the chance to catch Top Cat was usually there. In the later years it was added to the Boomerang block that was on after Adult Swim on sunday nights. Overall i think i had caught most of the episodes, but in a way similar to the Flintstones, had you asked me to pick a favorite, Top Cat probably wouldn't have been on my list.

Getting the chance to relive the whole show on DVD, i really appreciate it all the more. The cast and dialogue are really spectacular in this show. I guess maybe some of it went over my head when younger, but i do have genuine memories of laughing plenty at good old TC and the boys. I also have memories of talking about TC in school. (yes if anyone reads this of the modern revisionist variety, a lot of 90 kids talked plenty about the old cartoons back in the day, we weren't really "90s cartoons are best ever!" thing you see people pretending we were like today) Also I do have to note as a kid Spook was my fave of the gang, but now that i'm older that seemingly has switched to Choo-Choo.

Top Cat stands to me as a fun show that deserves the time it gets. TC is a well crafted crafty kind of cat. I'm happy to be able to relive his schenanigans.

I'll address the superstars 10 film at a later post.

Top Cat was inspired by Phil Silvers' popular sitcom "You'll Never Get Rich" (aka "Sgt. Bilko") and Silvers' performance as fast talking Army Sergeant Ernie Bilko and his gang, including sloppy bumbling fall guy Private Doberman played by "Benny The Ball's" voice himself, Maurice Gosfield. Daws Butler auditioned for the role of Top Cat using his Phil Silvers-ish Hokey Wolf voice but Arnold Stang won the role for the series.

Daws Butler played TC's voice in the ABC Superstar Movie pilot episode of "Yogi's Gang"titled "Yogi's Ark Lark". Stang and most of the Top Cat cast (Marvin Kaplan as Choo Choo, John Stephenson as Fancy Fancy, Leo DeLyon as Spook and Brain) reunited for the "Top Cat and the Beverly Hills Cats" tv movie with Avery Schreiber replacing Maurice Gosfield, who died in 1964, as Benny the Ball's voice.

Stang voiced TC on "Yogi's Treasure Hunt" and teamed-up with Marvin Kaplan as Choo Choo as an auto racing team in "The Fender Bender 500" segment of "Wake Rattle and Roll". Of course, Stang and Kaplan played hapless gas station attendants Ray and Irwin whose new fill-up station was single-handedly destroyed by an angry Jonathan Winters in the 1963 classic comedy "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World."
