    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

Teenage Monster Mashes.

    Heroic teen descendants of the legendary monsters. But Hanna-Barbera just called them The Drak Pack.

    I was curious to see how this trio could handle Dr. Dred and OGRE. I knew that the show was meant to be comical, and it was. It was funny to see Toad, after being reprimanded for doing something stupid, hit himself with a fly swatter, and say, "Bad Toad! Bad Toad!" Equally amusing was hearing Dred call Drak Jr, "Jack,", "Mack," etc, and for the young vampire to retort, "That's Drak!"

    But I noticed that even though it was easy to see that these boys looked pretty much the same in both their human and monster forms(Ok, maybe Howler didn't), no one could tell them apart, except for loyal viewers like me, Big D, and the villains. Still, it was always worth a look, and so, I followed it even when it moved to Sunday mornings. It was the last Saturday morning cartoon to do so, at least in the New York market.

    So I was very favorably impressed with "The Drak Pack," as I watched the threesome foil OGRE's nefarious plots. Even some of my friends liked it. But the reason I didn't bother ordering the DVD was that I wasn't sure how well it would play on my DVD player.

    This was followed in 1986 by "Teen Wolf," an animated spinoff of the live action movie. This turned out to be the final collaboration by H-B and Southern Star. I always preferred the live action film.

    Then, in 1990, there was another H-B animated series about teenage monsters. "Rick Moranis In Gravedale HIgh," or just "Gravedale High" for those who prefer it short and sweet. Here, the former Mackenzie Brother voiced a teacher whose students were monsters. I completely ignored it, for I saw it as proof that NBC was now on the decline in terms of Saturday morning programming.

    Trivia Question 23: Which of the following crimes did Dr. Dred and OGRE not commit? A. Robbing Fort Knox. B. Stealing a racehorse along with its jockey. C. Weather control. D. Cattle rustling.

    The meddling kids ARE the monsters...and good guys.

    Drak Jr. (Jerry Dexter doing a Don Adams impersonation) can turn into a bat, mist, and various other animal forms.
    Howler (Bill Callaway) had super breath to huff and puff his way out of danger.
    Frankie (Bill Callaway) was strong and can get even stronger when he becomes angry.
    Great Uncle Dracula aka "Big D" (Alan Oppenheimer) gave orders from his coffin in Transylvania and complained often about "kids today" and usually slamming the coffin lid on his fingers.

    Too bad, there never was a female member in the good guy Drak Pack group.

    O.G.R.E. (The Organization of Generally Rotten Enterprises/Endeavors) flew around in Dr. Dred's Dredgible and usually committed silly crimes on a grand scale:
    Dr. Dred (Hans Conried, sounding like Snidely Whiplash or Captain Hook) planned the crimes, taunted the Drak Pack, and barked orders to his OGRE minions.
    Toad (Don Messick, sounding like Peter Lorre) was Dr. Dred's bumbling assistant...I thought he seemed too nice to remain a bad guy for so long.
    Mummy Man (Chuck McCann) was strong and used his mummy wraps as a lasso.
    Vampira (Julie McWhirter, sounding like Eva Gabor) can change form into animals or insects. She has a particular rivalry with Drak Jr.
    Fly (Don Messick) can fly.

    VEI Canada, and not Warner Home Entertainment, released the entire "Drak Pack" series on DVD as it was a production of Hanna-Barbera Australia PTY Ltd.

    Clever scripts and a great Hans Conried performance, deliberately calling Drak every rhyming name except his right name.

    The animated "Teen Wolf" ran for 21 episodes with James Hampton reprising his film role as Scott Howard's father, Harold, with the same family werewolf curse.

    Townsend Coleman played the Michael J. Fox title role as Scott Howard with Donny Most as his best friend Stiles who knows about Scott's werewolf transformations, Jeannie Elias as Scott's friend Boof, June Foray as Grandma Howard, Stacy Keach Sr as Grandpa Howard, and Craig Sheffer as Scott's rival Mick.
