You WIll Need To Reset Your Password!!!

We just moved hosts on this system, and this has caused a few updates. One is the way we encode and store the encoded passwords.

Your old passwords will NOT work. You will need to reset your password. This is normal. Just click on reset password from the log in screen. Should be smooth as silk to do...

    Sorry for the hassle.

    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

In 1974, I hurried, hurried, and stepped right up to my TV set to watch "Devlin."

This show was the first Hanna-Barbera animated series to not follow any of the studio's recurring formulas--funny animals, mystery-solving teenagers, superheroes, etc. Instead, it presented itself as a combo of Evel Knievel and "Circus Boy"(by coincidence, the latter starred Mickey Dolenz, the voice of Tod, who at that time, went by his real name, Mickey Braddock). And, its premise of orphaned siblings working together to earn a living foreshadowed the live action show "Party Of Five" twenty years later. There was just one running gag: Jumbo the elephant dousing Tod with water, despite his efforts to avoid it.

I knew from day one that the show was there to show kids that circus performers don't always have it good. Particularly when Ernie performed his stunts, there was a "Kids, don't try this at home" message. In fact, the pilot episode showed Ernie being injured in an accident when a stunt went awry. Tod was the brains of the team, always coming up with an idea that worked. Sandy was the cute little sister whom I realized was an animal lover like me. She spearheaded a "Save The Osprey" campaign in one episode, and in another, feared an escaped circus lion would be killed if and when he was found. She even took in a lost pup, until its owner claimed it.

They performed to pay for their educations. Ernie stated once that he and Tod were collegians, and Sandy a junior high student.

The trio was joined by circus owner Hank, Jester the clown, Tex the cowboy, and many other performers. All things considered, I believe the show was cancelled way too soon. Maybe the folks at Warner will put it out on DVD eventually. The show was truly an outstanding effort on H-B's part.

Trivia Question 49: Sandy idolized a rocker with what "satanic" name?

    Answer: Lucifer.

A book on the artwork of Alex Toth had a promotional sketch for a never-made Hanna-Barbera series titled "Thunderwheels" which featured a family of race car drivers...I think that concept was changed to the "Devlin" series to take advantage of then-popular motorcycle stuntman Evel Knievel. Also, Ernie Devlin was originally named "Dare" Devlin but ABC network censors did not like that name.

It always seemed the same (stock background) people in the circus audience watched the Devlin family stunts in the different towns they performed in. The motorcycle animation seemed static with the same sideview of Ernie riding his cycle without the wheels moving.

The series was rather dialogue heavy with the action reserved for Ernie's stunts and for Ernie's expert cycle skills helping people in danger. The Bank Street Education group acted as consultants in the stories.

Ernie (Michael Bell) performed the stunts, Tod (Micky Dolenz) was the mechanic, and Sandy (Michelle Robinson) signaled the start and the timing of the stunts. Hank the circus manager (Norman Alden) acted as a surrogate father figure.

When Ernie was injured when a stunt goes wrong or in some non-circus motorcycle accident scenes, there is no "cartoon"-type slapstick violence or reaction...the characters in the series could get hurt in a realistic fashion...rather innovative for a 1970s-era tv cartoon series.

The Devlin family's father was a widowed motorcycle patrolman who was killed in the line of duty. One episode featured a flashback sequence with the Devlin's father responding to an emergency call during while off duty and skidding on an icy road and crashing to his death off screen with a broken motorcycle headlight rolling into frame...a rather powerful image for a Saturday kiddie cartoon.
