    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    I had decided to check out "Jabberjaw," since I was convinced it would be a runaway hit. And I admit I was amazed at what he could do. He could flatten himself to resemble a carpet, use his tail fin to cut through glass, and so on. And he was the drummer for the Neptunes, an otherwise human band.

    You know, the fact that Jabber spoke in a Curly Howard voice and kept saying, "I don't get no respect" didn't bother me for a minute. However, I was irked by Shelly's primadonna behavior. Come on, Shelly. Jabber may have acted without thinking at times, but it was always he who foiled the bad guys, so let's cut him some slack. I really liked it when he used the power helmet to make Shelly like him. Having been a bullying victim myself during my grade school and high school years, I easily related.

    The show itself did have plot elements of "Scooby Doo," "Josie And The Pussycats," and even "Sealab 2020," since all the adventures took place under the sea. It was also the last H-B series to have songs played during chase scenes. Jab was so popular that he had a cameo on Bill Cosby's short-lived variety show "Cos," and the theme song was sung by a nightclub singer in the "Dynomutt" episode "The Queen Hornet."

    I guess I liked the other three Neptunes. And I did feel bad for Bubbles. Shelly refused to see her as anything but a dumb blonde, but if you took a closer look, there were things she did without messing up, like snatching an incriminating disc from Dorsal, and disguising herself as Madame Sargasso to free the slaves. Not to mention using her perfume to allow Jabber to locate her and the others when they were imprisoned, and intentionally disregarding instructions in order to sabotage the Piranha's rocket. So, when she complained that she never got to do anything in "Malice In Aqualand," I'd say she forgot about those capers.

    Speaking of "Malice In Aqualand," I knew from the plot that it was inspired by "Westworld" and the sequel "Futureworld," the latter of which I'd seen in numerous TV ads, and also heard advertised on the radio.

    In one episode, Shelly revealed Jabber was ten years old. I wish I knew the equivalent of that in human years.

    Jabber kept boasting about being a great white shark, despite having a blue backside. That was something else that I disregarded. After all, he was one of H-B's better creations. And he even continued on after the show was cancelled. He quickly resurfaced as Buford's partner in "Yogi's Space Race."

    So I concur with the theme song that he was "The latest, greatest shark you ever saw."

    BTW, due to having to travel for my little sister's wedding over the Labor Day weekend, I'll be posting my remaining H-B threads every day after work starting tomorrow. The weekend threads will still be posted in the morning.

    Trivia Question 43: Name the sexy female shark Coldfinger hired to steal Jabber's deed.

    Joe Ruby and Ken Spears created the series for Hanna-Barbera...they were listed in the end credits as such. After working for Hanna-Barbera for a long while since the 1960s and creating shows like "The Herculoids" and "Scooby Doo", Ruby and Spears were free-lance writers in the 1970s and wrote scripts and creating ideas for other studios such as DePatie-Freleng and Sid and Marty Krofft as well as still working for Hanna-Barbera. Ruby and Spears formed their own animation company in 1978, with "Fangface" as their first production under their own company name.

    Jabberjaw was a regular race team member teamed with lazy Southern hound Buford of "The Buford Files" on "Yogi's Space Race" and also appeared as a judge in one "Laff-A-Lympics" episode.

    Frank Welker re-used his Curly Howard/Jabberjaw impression to voice the animated Curly with robotic powers in "The Three Robonic Stooges".

    Tommy Cook had previously played the nasty S. Melvin Farthingale in "Jeannie" and the bragging but sympathetic (barely) Augie in "The Funky Phantom"...here he plays the leader of the good guy and gals Neptunes band as Biff.

    Barry Gordon played Clamhead here and later in another sea-based Hanna-Barbera cartoon, he played the voice of Junior Wetworth in "The Snorks".

    Pat Parris played the tempermental Shelley...(think Alexandra Cabot with musical talent)...she later voiced the nicer Pammy Panda in "Shirt Tales".

    Julie McWhirter played the Gracie Allen-like goofy Bubbles. She married radio personality and writer of the song "Disco Duck", Rick Dees.

    I've never really watched Jabberjaw--however, I always loved this old Cartoon Network "Groovie" and figured if it ever got revamped, it had to look exactly like this!

    DePatie-Freleng also capitalized on the "Jaws"/shark craze with their own cartoon "Misterjaw" using Arte Johnson's "Laugh-In" German Soldier voice as a top-hatted, bow-tied, tuxedoed, and easily flustered shark menacing ocean life with very little effectiveness. The segment was added to the NBC "Pink Panther" series when it expanded to 90 minutes joining "The Inspector", "The Texas Toads (formerly "Tijuana Toads"), and "The Ant and The Aardvark".

    Arnold Stang played Misterjaw's derby-hatted talkative buddy "Catfish" and Robert Allen Ogle doubled as a story writer and as the voice of little "Harry Halibut" whom Misterjaw chased around and wanted to eat up...Harry was always the fish that got away.

    Jabberjaw was one of the regulars for the Mysteries Incorporated block. Like HKP, I was kind of surprised how few episodes were made in total since as a kid I could have sworn i don't remember it being that short.

    Jabberjaw as a show is a fine example of it's type, but not the best at what it does. I think mostly because the chemistry of the gang in this one just doesn't work as well for me as the others. Not saying i disliked it, it's just i feel it's not the best mesh. Jabberjaw himelf is pretty funny and good. While Clamhead seems to be designed to be his primary buddy, i can't help but feel his more antagonist reactions with Shelly come off with a lot better chemistry. Bubbles delivers some good blunder moments but as a whole I'm not as attached to the Neptunes as I am to other meddling kids gangs.

    Over all though still another fun show in the bunch. The underwater theme is pretty cool too. And in truth a shark drummer still registers as cool to me at 22 as it did when i first saw it as a kid. I'll give Jabberjaw some respect, as the show does make me laugh and have fun. So the Jaws did it's job. You don't have to always be the best to do a good job. That'll do shark, that'll do.
