    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

Well, I can certainly identify these as Comic Relief associates to Surly the squirrel from Toonbox Entertainment's The Nut Job. However, I must hang my head in shame, since I've yet to see this feature. Some cartoon enthusiast I am, hmph. So I cannot rightly name these groundhogs until I actually screen this feature. It's my duty to encourage upstart studios to produce animation, n'est-ce pas?

How about I give you credit where credit is due? You got the characters right for the most part. Their names are Jimmy, Johnny, and Jamie, and they call themselves the Bruisers. So all things considered, good job. :). You may now post a new character.

How nice, that was gracious. Do I know any good girl characters that haven't been named yet? Yup, I do.

1a) This female character occurs only once to date in a completely animated feature film.

1b) Although she survives to the end of the film, and could technically recur, that's not likely. This appears to be a one-off effort, and the creators are retired or almost.

    2) Her father is a king, which means this character is a princess. Everything's Better With Princesses.

    3) Just like Princess Peach, this character gets captured by the villain's henchmen, and taken to his stronghold. He has only one, so there's no danger that the hero will infiltrate the wrong castle.

    Okay, intermediate clues time.

    4) For a princess, she's mighty clever. She manages to ditch her abductors for a while, and hook up with one of the heroes. However, she gets recaptured again, so her net ends up zero.

    5) Since there's conflict in this story, mighty muscular men get to fight and kill and die and fight some more. This princess pouts because she has to stay behind and do girly stuff.

    6) For a princess, this character has a very limited wardrobe. Perhaps it's the tropical climate that necessitates the less-is-more look. Actually, it's her character designer doing his thing. ;)

    And cupcake clues time.

    7) Though the names are similar, as are the skimpy outfits, this character is no relation to Marvel Comics striped superheroine.

    8) While the hero was all set to slay one of the villain's lackeys, this princess shows him mercy, saying the time of war is over. Such a nice girl.

    9) Her appearance and attire are likely modeled after those non-combat nubile minxes that slink near a mighty muscled warrior. Her creator actually makes these images for a living.

Well, it must be my turn to swallow a dud. This is Teegra, daughter of the king of Firekeep, from Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta's feature Fire And Ice. This one was hoped to put Bakshi back on the animation map, but it under-performed badly at the box office; poor distributorship and bus-change promotion didn't help. Princess Teegra gets kidnapped from her chambers at the palace by the shambling grunts sent by Queen Juliana of Icepeak. Firekeep and Icepeak are the only two palaces shown: one for Good Guys, one for Bad Guys. Teegra does manage to give her kidnappers the slip, but she gets bagged by the son of a witch. Shortly before getting captured, Teegra pouts about the menfolk getting all the action, while she can only lounge on pillows and study books. Poor baby. Teegra wears what amounts to a bikini with a sheer harem jacket; the jacket doesn't last long. Since she was designed by Frank Frazetta, of Barbarian and Leg-Clinger fame, Teegra follows that template nicely. She's no relation to Marvel Comics' Tigra of the stripes and pouncing variety.

Yeah, that film was kind of a dud. Watchable, but still a dud. Maybe I should take a hint EmeraldIsle and field some siblings.

    1) This pair of characters occurs in an animated television series no longer in production. They are not the main characters, however.

    2) If these two have given names, it's never mentioned. Instead, these two are known only by their surname, like the Warner Brothers.

    3) These two are the henchmen to an evil boss. If the boss succeeds, they'll become accessories to murder. Either they're too dumb to think of this, or they're too blasé to care; it's hard to say which.

Oh good, I haven't gone completely dead end. :) Yes, these are the Bully Brothers, henchmen to the Hooded Claw, from Hanna-Barbera's The Perils of Penelope Pitstop. Good work, Em. :D

Thanks, OUB. Now for a totally untapped one:

    1. I was animated just once for an animated special starring some well-known comic strip kids.

    2. Most of the specials center around specific holidays. The one I'm in mentions an annual sports event in the title.

    3. I'm a girl who beats the boys and wins the grand prize.

Three more clues, and that'll be it:

    4. The annual sport event I mentioned took place just the other day.

    5. At first, I'm only there to cheer on the participants.

    6. You could say my name is the Pussycats' drummer, repeated.

I thought the last three clues would clinch it. Guess not. The answer is, Melody-Melody," from "You're In The Superbowl, Charlie Brown." She's one of the more obscure Peanuts characters, so I guess no one really remembers. Anyway, to explain the clues:

    Clues 1,2, 4, 5 and 6 are self-explanatory.

    3. The grand prizes are a bike and a trip to the Superbowl, complete with tickets. She beats Charlie Brown and Linus, even though both boys start out ahead of her.

So I may pick another one, or someone else can post.

Looks like I'll have to post a new one after all. Trust me, this one's easier:

    1. I appear just once in a love-themed short.

    2. When I get home, a big oaf mistakes me for a male of my species in drag.

    3. At the end of the cartoon, both my lover boy and I make the mistake of nibbling an explosive veggie.

This must be Daisy Lou from Hare Splitter, directed by "Friz" Freleng in 1948. The big oaf is Casbah, also a one-timer, unless he was repurposed from Easter Yeggs. The closing scene has Daisy Lou notice a box of exploding carrots (another fine Acme product) and scarfs one down. When she and Bugs lip-lock, the bang that almost blows their heads apart is mistaken as a sign of an ideal lover.

Fairness time. We've missed this supporting character, but fielded the all other ones.

    1) This character occurs in a regularly televised animated series that's no longer in production.

    2) Perhaps this character failed to earn a second season due to his zero percent success rate. Of course, that's true of his colleagues, as well.

    3) Normally, this character wouldn't even qualify for his missions, except for the fact that's he's bi-lingual, which makes him indispensable.
