    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

Time to reveal. This is the ill-fated Chicharron from Coco.
    1. Chicharron is a memorable "One scene wonder." Yet ironically, the entire scene with him ends with him being forever forgotten.
    2. Hector has apparently borrowed many things from Chicharron that he's never returned--including of all things--his femur!
    3. Chicharron fades away for good from the Land of the Dead because there is no one left in the Land of the Living to remember him. Needless to say, he won't be getting his guitar back anytime soon.
    4. Even in the Land of the Dead, the dead can fade away for good if they are completely forgotten about in the Land of the Living. This happens to Chicharron, despite already being dead.
    5. Hector has to play Chicharron's favorite song for him in return for the guitar. A farewell song, if you will.
    6. "Everyone Knows Juanita" is a rather bawdy song about a very ugly woman. Hector has to change a line in the lyric because Miguel is present. Chicharron even points out that"Those aren't the words!" while Hector simply explains "There are children present!"
    7. Self-explanatory really. Miguel needs the guitar to play in a contest so he can win it to go to Ernesto de la Cruz's concert to meet him and get his blessing to go back to the Land of the Living before it's too late.
    8. Hector is also running out of time as his daughter Coco is the only one left who truly remembers him--and she's starting to forget him.
    9. These are the improvised lyrics Hector comes up with when singing "Everyone Knows Juanita" because "There are children present!" It's definitely NOT her knuckles that drag on the floor.

Anyhow, since emeraldisle came the closest, she can do the next character.
    Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks, Glowworm. Here's one that's been completely overlooked:

    1. I live in a big city zoo.

    2. I may be a little rodent, but I'm definitely a bad guy.

    3. My late voice actor also voiced my adversary--a walrus who's paired with a penguin.

    Ok, three more clues:

    4. Like the title character, I have an alliterative name.

    5. In what seems to be an ongoing pattern from my studio, I'm paired with a feline predator, just like a similar character from the studio's first animated series.

    6. My surname may make you think of a classic Van Halen song--which was number one nearly 35 years ago.

Ah, in honor of Total Television's series, Tennessee Tuxedo And His Friends, this'd be that snarky antagonist Jerboa Jump. It seems Jerboa's whole purpose in life is to ridicule Tennessee's ideas, sabotage his efforts, and cheat in any contest. Sort of an in-house Dick Dastardly.

So, we're doing the nasty, snarky types, eh? Okay, I know one of those.

    1) This character appears only once in a completely animated feature film. She won't recur, because she dies during the final battle.

    2) Now, this is one haughty, nasty mother. Brace yourselves: her son is even worse! And she's proud of him for that.

    3) This character is royalty, a queen specifically. Her opponent is a king from a domain to the south. They couldn't be more diametric opposites.

I've though of a few evil mothers with evil sons, but none of them are actually queens, and the only queen I can think of doesn't quite fit all of the clues either.

Yeah, the only character I can think of is the Fairy Godmother from Shrek II. But she's obviously not a queen.
However, her son is Prince Charming.

Same thinking as me, Saltyboot! I also thought of Zira from the Second Lion King movie, Simba's Pride--but I don't think she was a queen, or that either one of her sons were actually worse than her. Just forced to follow along really. I also thought of the Mouse Queen from The Nutcracker Prince--but it's past Christmas, and she wasn't killed during the final battle--just crushed.

Excellent swings at the target, everyone, but not quite. Perhaps these Intermediate Clues will help:

    4) For a sitting monarch, this queen is never seen sitting. It's her son that occupies the chair. She clearly has spoiled him rotten.

    5) Yes, she's human, not some Funny Animal or alien hybrid. And a woman, of course, though with a very masculine jawline.

    6) This lady obviously doesn't see the sun much: very pale skin and raven-black hair, in a violet gown with plunging neckline. Which is the most modest outfit in the entire film.

Holy crap, I actually figured this one out. This is Queen Juliana from the film Fire and Ice from 1983--directed by Ralph Bakshi. That clue about the revealing outfits gave me a hint that this must be for an older audience--and somehow this film flashed in my mind-although I've never seen it--nor know too much about it, except that it's an epic fantasy.

Absolutely right, Glowworm: this is Queen Juliana of the domain Icepeak from Fire And Ice. Her son is the Camp Gay Spoiled Brat wizard Nekron. Nekron uses his ice powers to expand Icepeak's icy terrain ever further southward, slowly overrunning Firekeep. Queen Juliana looks somewhat like Elvira, but with more culture and more disdain. Once her son Nekron is defeated, the fortress of Icepeak starts collapsing, and Juliana falls to her doom, because ice castles have no safety railings. Story and direction by Ralph Bakshi, character design by Frank Frazetta. The men tend to dress like Zandor, while Princess Teegra wears only a bikini with a veil, and the veil doesn't last that long, either.

Thanks for that description of Queen Juliana--took one look at her picture and once I saw her pale skin, dark hair and purple dress, I knew I was correct.
Anyhow, I believe I've got one.
    1. There are three of us to be exact.
    2. We're from a Disney movie, but the scene we're in plays out more like a Looney Tunes scenario.
    3. We aren't after any rabbits, though. We're hunting amphibians.

Thanks, Glowworm. And now for some more untapped clues:

    1. We've been seen in both live action and animation since our video game days.

    2. We're based in Brooklyn.

    3. We guess you could say our job is a pipe dream.

    Three more clues:

    4. Our animated series premiered 30 years ago.

    5. Our names are purely Italian.

    6. One of us has a first name that's also our last name.

Huh, nobody seems to be touching this one. Well, I have no shame. These must be the Mario Brothers: Mario (red) and Luigi (green). Like Sonic the Hedgehog, the Mario Brothers had their own animated television series, though not with the same longevity.

Nifty. :) And while we're completing sets, here's one with the wife on the Mystery Character List, but where's hubby? Right here:

    1) This character appears in a regularly televised animated series that's no longer in production. He survives every episode, though not as well as he'd like.

    2) This character is a family man: a wife and three kids. His wife has already been tapped for the MCL, so it's time to add the breadwinner.

    3) Speaking of husband and father, the man who supplies this character's voice also portrays a husband and father in a live-action series. The man has this role down pat.
