    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Popeye the Sailor Man, the ancient mariner whose superpowers come from a tin can, celebrates his 75th anniversary on Saturday.

    A year-long series of events is planned by King Features Syndicate, which owns the rights to the navy guy with the huge biceps.

    Among these is a "Popeye" 3-D animated TV special written by comedian Paul Reiser (Mad About You). Produced by Vancouver's Mainframe Entertainment (also responsible for ReBoot), it'll air on Fox during prime time holiday season sometime between November 24 and December 21.

    From sundown to midnight this weekend in New York City, the Empire State Building will shine its tower lights green "in honor of Popeye's enormous love of spinach," said.

    Popeye first appeared on January 17, 1929 as a limited story line guest in E.C. "Elzie" Segar's comic strip Thimble Theatre (future girlfriend Olive Oyl had been introduced a decade earlier).

    His animated debut came in Popeye The Sailor (1933), released by Fleischer Studios. This was a Betty Boop cartoon in which he, skinny Olive Oyl and villainous strongman Bluto were guest stars. Popeye was voiced by William Sam Costello.

    Popeye graduated to his own series later that year, starting with I Yam What I Yam.

    The sailor has usually tangled with Bluto (also known as Brutus), but his opponents have, a times, ranged from goats to gophers. In the 1980s, he appeared in a video game, collecting falling hearts from Olive.

    An attempt to bring Popeye to the live-action big screen was made when Robin Williams starred in Robert Altman's 1980 musical Popeye. Williams' movie debut was a critical and commercial flop. He once reflected: "If you watch it backwards, it has a plot."
