You WIll Need To Reset Your Password!!!

We just moved hosts on this system, and this has caused a few updates. One is the way we encode and store the encoded passwords.

Your old passwords will NOT work. You will need to reset your password. This is normal. Just click on reset password from the log in screen. Should be smooth as silk to do...

    Sorry for the hassle.

    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

    ~ Greetings, Folks!
Has anyone else out there seen an early 1936 release from Walter Lantz Studios, "Voodoo in Harlem"? I use to have a copy on VHS tape but it was destroyed in a house fire. Anyway, it starts with a live-action shot of clouds moving across a full moon. As the the music picks up the scene shifts inside to show a Lantz animator (Frank Tipper?) finishing for the day. The drawing comes to life and starts singing and dancing across a live-action background of the animation studio. Soon joined by other characters jumping out of the inkwells. All the "definately not-PC" characters are done as African wild natives with grass skirts and bones in their noses. A storm brews up outside and blows down the chimney scattering the natives and mixing up all the animation drawings. As the short ends a live-action African-American cleaning lady comes in and starts complaining about the mess the artists have let her to clean up. The last shot shows a days work of animation going up in smoke in the incinerator. Classic!

Here is a print on Youtube - slightly spoiled by occasional appearances of the time code info:

Very much harking back to the Fleischer Out of the Inkwell films (as with those, the "life action" backgrounds are still photographs) it really is a lot of fun!

    ~ Wow! Peter, Thanks!

Some time back (a couple years?) I checked on YouTube and couldn't find a copy. I think of all the Hollywood studios Lantz had the highest ratio of racial-type cartoons. All beautifully made... all incredibly wrong! These cartoons have some amazing music and animation and should be preserved as historical examples of a time when less tolerance between races prevailed. It's a shame because most of the films contain funny little bits immediately followed by something grossly inappropriate!

As for "Voodoo in Harlem" the animation of the little natives is cycled over and over, flipped in reverse and even staggered one over the other in order to pad the length of the scenes. If the background photos of the animation studio and music room are any indication, the Lantz studio had some pretty sweet furnishings! Also I noticed Frank Tipper received animation credit on this film. It must have been his specialty as he provided animation on the majority of these type films for Lantz, including "Scrub Me Mama with a Boogie Woogie Beat".
