    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

Wild West Horseplay.

Now for my thoughts on Quickdraw McGraw.

This spoof of TV westerns was both brilliant and hilarious. Quickdraw was totally sure of himself, but Baba Looey was the true brains of the team, and one of my favorite characters from the studio. I also enjoyed the episodes with Snuffles. The way he acted after eating a dog biscuit was amusing. And it was he, not Scooby-Doo, who started H-B's trend of dogs doing the job for a treat.

But the episodes I really liked were those when Quickdraw donned a mask and cape, and became the Zorro-type hero El Kabong. I don't know, there was just something about seeing him whack people with a guitar, and say, "KABONG!"

    As for the other cartoons:

Augie Doggy And Doggy Daddy. Here we had a father and son based on Spike and Tyke. They often had crises that Augie created single-handedly. But I was able to see that Doggie Daddy was a father with a heart of gold who was just looking out for his little one-a trait later displayed by most of H-B's human dads.

Snooper And Blabber. This cat and mouse detective team could never be mistaken for Tom and Jerry. But they weren't exactly Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse either. Still, I liked the ways they set about solving the crimes, and bringing in the bad guys. Their antics always left me laughing--and that's good.

BTW, I decided not to include Loopy De Loop, since his shorts were theatrical. Suffice it to say I found them likeable when I saw them on Cartoon Network.

Quick Draw McGraw was fun stuff--especially the "El Kabong" episodes. I especially liked one which featured an orange Snagglepuss as an antagonist who takes up the mantle of "El Kazing" who uses a whip. This ends with Baba Looey taking up the mantle of "El Kapowie" who uses a boxing glove--hilarious.
Some of these shorts were written by Mike Maltese--and you can clearly see Looney Tunes gags emulated in these shorts. Although I must admit, due to the limited animation and the tendency of Hanna Barbara characters to explain practically everything they're doing, it doesn't work quite as well at times. For example I recall one in which Baba Looey places all the furniture on the ceiling ala "Mouse Wreckers." While in "Mouse Wreckers" we get a delightful silent reaction from Claude to this stunt, here we keep hearing the crook and McGraw mention the obvious. "I must be on the ceiling and get to the floor." We already get that, guys, no need to mention it.

However, it was still good stuff, especially with the clever quips from Baba Looey--the true brains of the duo, although McGraw would like "To do the thining around here."

Trivia Question 96: What was the very first cartoon in which Quick Draw and other classic characters interacted with Yogi Bear? Hint: It wasn't "Yogi's Ark Lark."

Wild guess: "Yogi Bear's Birthday Party"?

(If I'm correct, the credit should go to "Yowp" since I read about it on his blog.)
