    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

    The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    If anyone of you have heard of Raymond Briggs (writer and illustrator of The Snowman and Father Christmas and The Bear, among countless others), you must surely include either "When the wind Blows" or "Grampa."

    "When the Wind Blows" is a very disturbing, harrowing and grim tale of an old couple almost blissfully unaware of the effects a nuclear bomb can do when it has gone off only a few miles away. What starts out as funny slowly ebbs away at the humor until the images themselves become more grim and dark. Possibly more shocking than saddening, but well worth a look. Also available in comic strip form.

    "Grampa" is even worse! Simple memories about a Grampa's youth and life are retold to his grand-daughter. It's beautiful. So why on earth does he die at the end? Why? A wonderful tale is suddenly changed into a weep-fest.

    This particular cartoon is from the WW2 era, I think. It opens with a wintry, Christmas Eve scene with a warm little house in the snow. Inside the house we see Grandma and Grandpa mouse rocking these two baby mice by the fireplace in this walnut shell. They start talking about the war and then it goes into a flashback of all of its horrors. Then the closing scene has the grandparent mice commenting on how they hope the baby mice never have to see that. I only saw this once 12 years ago, and I still get a big lump in my throat talking about it!

    Sounds a lot like Peace on Earth (MGM, 1939), which featured two squirrel children and a grandfather squirrel.
    It was the only cartoon ever nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.<

    I want to bump this because I found two cartoons that nearly made me cry...

    "She's a Good Skate, Charlie Brown" when Woodstock whistled ,"O Mio Babbino Caro" by Puccini. That won her the trophy despite having the audio cassette break on the.

    The other is in "Garfield and his Nine Lives" the 6th life, "Diana's Piano" is a little dramatic and Diana dies on the piano in the end.
