    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

Sweet. :) I'll likely have a decent quote ready after dinner. And here it is:

    "Bo Peep, man."

This would be the Southern Wolf from the 1958 Michael Lah directed Droopy short, "Sheep Wrecked." Of course, the wolf is employing the old Little Bo Peep chestnut hoping Droopy will fall for it. Droopy knows it's the wolf however when he pulls up his bloomers like a window shade and reveals his hairy legs.

Precisely, Glowworm. This is the Southern Wolf from Sheep Wrecked, not even bothering to use a falsetto voice, or ditching the beatnik-like speech pattern.

That's what makes it so damn funny. He's not even trying with that disguise.
I'm not feeling well, so this quote will do just fine.
"Eh, let's see now. Eh, he's turning um, he's eh eh--he's turning plaid!"
    "Don't overdo it."

Oh, I recognize those incorrigible mice, Hubie and Bertie, channeling their inner Bud Abbott & Lou Costello, to screw with the mind of Claude Cat. I think this cartoon short is The Hypochondri-Cat, but I'm likely off on that. But, yeah, these two tiny tricksters are convincing the poor cat that he's contracted a horrible illness which requires surgery to cure.

Correct, Oneuglybunny. This is Hubie and Bertie from "The Hypochondri-Cat." Hubie makes Claude think he's turning colors such as green and purple. Bertie wants to join in on the fun and pick the next color for poor Claude to turn. He can't quite pick one at first--and then this happens.

Doubly funny when Claude Cat actually does turn plaid. And through his fur, no less! Amazing what fools can do when they don't know it can't be done.

And on the topic of not knowing what you can't do:

"Well, of course we were [swimming]! We were in the water, we were moving, we got wet, didn't we?"
    [sudden realization]
    "We were swimming!"

Yes, that's precisely who spoke that quote: Muk the polar bear from Balto by Amblimation. Earlier, he and his partner Luk had been panicking about drowning in a puddle of water. It was the biting snark of Boris the goose, who pointed out that they could save themselves by standing up, and that "tide is out!" However, when Balto needed rescuing from a watery grave, these two goofballs suddenly became Big Damn Heroes.

Thanks, OUB. And now, while we're on the subjects of water and swimming, here's a cool one:

    "Three weeks? Oh no!"

Oh, at first, my thinking ran to someone stranded on one of those classic desert islands that's pretty much a sand dune with a single coconut tree on it. He gets the news that help is coming, but it'll take three weeks to get there. But now that I've gotten this much-needed hint, my thinking is pointed precisely where it ought to go: the original series of Jonny Quest, specifically the episode "Pursuit of the Po-Ho." In that one, Roger Bannon dyes his skin an odd purplish color using some local berries as the tint. He poses as the river god Aquisio to unnerve a tribe of savages into releasing their hostages. The drawback is that the berry-tint tends to infuse the entire epidermis, meaning the effect will be visible for about three weeks. Clearly, Race is dismayed by this news.

Forgive me for tapping this chestnut again, but it's chock full of pithy quotes. Such as this one:

Exactly right, EmeraldIsle, this is young Cale Tucker from 20th Century Fox's Titan A.E. as directed by Don Bluth. Cale is working at Tau Station, a salvage yard of derelict spaceships. During a meal break, Cale gripes about the alien version of spaghetti and meatballs to his mentor, Tek. The spaghetti resembles boiled kelp, and the meatballs are some kind of tentacled urchin with the tentacles sheared off. These "meatballs" can sense when they're lying on a bed of warm kelp, and instinctively start hopping off the plate for dear life. Good memory, Em. :D
