    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

That is correct and for the reasons stated. Take it away.

Thank you, but I am super tired right now. I will try to think of a character tomorrow afternoon when I come home.

    As promised, here we go.
    1. I'm one of those characters that started out in a few series and eventually for better or for worse, got my own show.
    2. I'm NOT a chicken, although the two characters I started out with seemed to thinks so, despite living in a swampy environment.
    3. For some weird reason, in my own series, I ended up chasing a dragonfly as my prey.

    More clues.
    4. I'm a dopey, clumsy bird.
    5. The dragonfly I chase literally breathes fire.
    6. Unlike earlier characters, my shorts were made for television.

    Time to cork this one.
    7. I come from the same animation company that gave us a fuchsia feline, a pair of Mexican frogs, and a bumbling detective.
    8. In fact, the frogs are the ones I first started out with.
    9. I also appeared at times with a fast, blue snake.

Aha! Put nine clues together, and you get Crazylegs Crane.

Yeah, he's a pretty obscure one.
    1. Crazylegs started out as a side character. He's been seen in The Dogfather, (a series I've never seen) The Tijuana Toads, and The Blue Racer. He eventually got his own show. I've only seen one or two of those shorts, but truth be told, he's not very good on his own.
    2. Crazylegs started out in the Tijuana Toads shorts. They always mistook him for a chicken.
    3. Cranes tend to eat snakes and frogs. While they do eat insects, I do find it a bit strange that of all the creatures they could have had him chase was this annoying dragonfly. The rest of the clues are self-explanatory.

Thanks, Glowworm. Time once again to venture into untapped territory:

    1. Our short is based on a well-known nursery rhyme.

    2. We hate work, even though it's the law.

    3. Our decision to pretend to be sightless gets us out of work, and into danger.

These are the last three clues I can think of:

    4. There's no farmer's wife in our short.

    5. None of us are human, but we do like to beg for cheese.

    6. Our cartoon precedes those starring a maniacal woodpecker, a young panda, and a baby penguin.

Ah, clue 6 points squarely at Walter Lantz, the creator of Woody Woodpecker, Andy Panda and Chilly Willy. In 1935, Walter Lantz wrote, produced and directed the cartoon Three Lazy Mice, in which the Mouse King insists that all mice work to attain a rightful share of cheese. Of course, three nonconformists attempt to circumvent this requisite.

Nice. :) Ah, found a character. Not the star, but close enough.

    1) This character appears only once to date in an animated feature film. There are some live actors in this one, but they're situated at the other end of the country like bookends.

    2) This fellow is the stalwart companion / coach / confidante to the title character, which is handy, because the "hero" starts out wallowing in self-pity.

    3) This character speaks English just fine, though he's from another country where English is a second language. The United States just happens to be in his flight path.

    Intermediate clues time.

    4) This character does all his doings in the Western United States. Way past the Mighty Mississippi River, past the tumbleweeds and the saloons, past the grizzled prospectors and the Miner Forty-Niners. This is the Westiest West that's still the U.S.

    5) I know I described this character as a stalwart companion, but ultimately, the hero must do the heroics alone. This character gets assigned a secondary mission which takes him away from critical action.

    6) Fair Play Rule: this character is not human. Neither is the title character, for that matter. Got one heck of a profile, too.

    And cupcake clues time:

    7) Debuted on Friday 22 December 1995. Merry Christmas, peoples.

    8) For once, Spielberg's Amblimation wrote an animated feature from scratch. Who knew?

    9) The late Bob Hoskins can be heard, doing a Hollywood-Siberian accent.

Oh, good, Boris the goose from Balto gets saved from the Forgotten Sea by Emerald Isle. :) That's worth a fresh +1 and control of the board. Clue 3: "old country" is Mother Russia. Alaska is right next door, so to speak, just across the Bering Strait. Clue 4 is Nome, Alaska, which is 165° West longitude, even further west than Hawaii. Yes, Alaska is part of the United States, despite what Homer Simpson says.

Thanks, OUB. Now I return to another animated classic with these clues:

    1. I sail along with the title characters.

    2. One of them is my own nephew.

    3. My adversary is a most dishonest man.

Three more clues should clinch this guy:

    4. My name may make you think I'm out of breath.

    5. I was created by a legendary Warner Bros. staffer.

    6. My buddies and I weren't always animated--we started out as puppets.
