    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

The Mystery Cartoon Character Game, now with 20% more ongoing.

If I'm not mistaken, this must be Goopy Geer--a Goofy-like character from Merry Melodies. He wasn't seen again until an episode of Tiny Toon Adventures called "Two Tone Town."

Yes, Glowworm, it's Goopy Geer. Good job. :) Clues 1 and 3 are self-explanatory. The character was "retired" when Rudolf Ising left Warner Bros. It's your turn now.

    Thanks.
    1. I don't appreciate my husband's inventing skills.
    2. I don't think he appreciates me.
    3. He uses his new invention to get rid of me, but even the devil himself can't stand me!

Ah, the witchy wife of Professor Calvin Q. Calculus, inventor of the Portable Hole. She's so grating that the Devil evicts her from his fiery depths.

Oh, she has a name. I just got edge-you-kay-ted, yup. Thanks for the facts, Glowworm. :) And lookie here, it's hole-spackling time.

    1) This character has appeared only once in animated form, debuting in a feature film. She has been depicted in other media, most historic biographs.

    2) Since this character is very loosely based on an actual person from history, she's in the Public Domain.

    3) Once again, Hollywood engineers an orphan to garner sympathy. True to history, this character starts out with two parents, but events turn ugly, and she's left parentless.

Yep, she and Calvin once showed up in a Hitchcock esque episode of the Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries.
As for this one, I know it, but will stay down unless necessary. I did just have a turn--and the Jewish holidays are here.

Hmmm. Would this be Anya, a.k.a. Anastasia, the daughter of Tsar Nicholas II?

Yes, it certainly wound be the orphan Anya. In fact, it is Anya, who regains enough of her memories to reclaim her identify as Princess Anastasia Romanov, according to the Don Bluth feature Anastasia. Good memory, Saltyboot, and I suspect Glowworm, too. Of course, events in Bolshevik Russia didn't have such a happy ending, so Bluth chose to take some Artistic License with History.

Yup, exactly who I thought it was--although there have been a few more lesser known animated movies with her out there. Direct to video/DVD I suspect. One even had the spirits of her family in the form of talking instruments--I am not kidding.

Thanks OUB. Here's one I dug up.

I have been animated a couple of times. Once traditional and the other stopmotion.
I originated as a mascot for a magazine.
The magazine had it's own tv show.

Aha, Alfred E. Neuman, MAD magazine's cover boy, the "what, me worry?" kid. Complete with a gap between his incisors, off-kilter eyeballs, and at-home barbering.

Yes, that's correct! His stopmotion segment was on MAD TV, and he had a cameo on The Simpsons episode, "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson."

Nice. :) And so that the Star doesn't sit on the Used List all alone, I'll tap this character. With a safety glove on, of course.

    1) This character occurs exactly once to date, in a completely animated feature film. No live people in this one, guaranteed.

    2) This character is, let's be honest, a horndog. His big three are eating, talking and mating. Fortunately for the girls, he's only successful at the first two items.

    3) He survives to the end of the story, although there was a catastrophe that almost made him a casualty. Score one for the uglies.

    Intermediate clues time.

    4) This character is not human. Humans haven't been invented yet. He can walk upright if he must, though.

    5) Since humans aren't around, combs haven't been invented yet, either. Wowee, this character could use one, desperately.

    6) Despite this character's small size, and constant jabbering, he doesn't get eaten. He has the large main character as his bodyguard / transport.

I think you've found it, too, Em: this is indeed Zini the lemur from Disney's Dinosaur. Zini talks a big game, like he's a dream date, but his motor mouth and unkempt fur make him the dud. He's made friends with Aladar, so his life isn't totally alone. Good solving. :D

Thanks, OUB. Now for a newly discovered character:

    1. I'm the BFF of the title character.

    2. My full name rhymes.

    3. I hate camping, even though I'm an ex-Girl Scout.

    Three more clues:

    4. My friend started out in an adversarial relationship with two obnoxious boys.

    5. My name consists of Tarzan's mate, and Superman's damsel in distress.

    6. I try to be an artist, eventually going to a Boston art school.

Since I ran out of clues, and no one got it, I'll provide the answer. It's Jane Lane, from "Daria."

Clues 1, 2, 4, and 5 are self-explanatory. Jane was a former Girl Scout who hated camping, go figure. When she and Daria headed off to college, she enrolled at a Boston art school, which really does exist.

So in all fairness, I'll let someone else post the next character.
