    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

The Mystery Cartoon Character Game, now with 20% more ongoing.

Correct, this is Retsuko, a red panda from the Sanrio series "Aggrestuko." Don't let the cute style fool you though. It's an adult oriented series that takes place in an accounting office. Also, Retsuko turns to singing heavy metal to relieve her stress from working in the office and dealing with her chauvinistic boss who is literally a pig.

Thanks, Glowworm. Now with Father's Day coming up, here's my newest one:

    1. My animated appearances are in flashbacks only.

    2. My wife and I never make it home, but my little son does.

    3. My boy is what he is today because of that fateful night.

    Three more clues:

    4. Come 2019, my family and I will all be 80 years old.

    5. My first animated appearance was way back in 1985.

    6. My son was inspired by something that flies in the night.

Since I obviously made a bad choice with this character, here's the answer: It's Thomas Wayne, who was first animated for the Superpowers Team: Galactic Guardians episode, "The Fear." He was subsequently featured in several animated Batman cartoons.

Well, it's been 3 long months since a mystery character was posted, so here's one that should be easy:

    1. I could be mistaken for Paul Bunyan if I weren't a racer.

    2. I'm accompanied by one who does the same thing I do.

    3. My car isn't metallic, and has a very odd but appropriate set of wheels.

Aha, Rufus Roughcut from Hanna-Barbera's Wacky Races series. His navigator is Sawtooth the beaver. They compete together in a wooden crate with circular saw blade wheels dubbed The Buzz Wagon.

Goodie. :) And here's a hole in the roster that I can patch:

    1) This character first appeared in an animated feature film, which spawned a series of direct-to-video sequels.

    2) One of those quiet types, this character doesn't say much. In fact, he says nothing at all. Y'know, the strong, silent type.

    3) Normally, one's parents get to name a newborn. This character gets named by his four associates.

Time for intermediate clues, coming right up.

    4) Nobody in the cast is human. Humans haven't been invented yet.

    5) Yay for diversity: in the traveling band of five, there's no two alike, or even similar.

    6) This character is one of five Free Range Children. A disaster separated these li'l ones from their parents. Awww.

Well, since no one answered yesterday, it's up to me to provide the answer again. It's Spike, from "The Land Before Time."

Correct, this is Spike the spiketail from Bluth's The Land Before Time, before Spoilberg got hold of the franchise, and milked it down to the bone. Good memory, Em.

Thanks, OUB. Now how about this clue:

    1. I was born on an American Bayou.

    2. Like many others, I befriend two humans who become amphibians, and oppose the bad guy.

    3. Unfortunately, my friendship only lasts until my light goes out.

I can't believe this one is so difficult to figure out. Three more clues:

    4. My movie was released in 2009.

    5. My other friends include a gator.

    6. Contrary to the film's title, my human lady friend isn't royalty.

No other takers? Okay, rather than let this go into the unguessed morass, I'll swing at this one. The character is found in Disney's The Princess And The Frog, specifically the firefly in the N'Orleans swamp. This insect has a name, I presume, but since I've yet to see this film, I've no idea what that name is. So I'll use the name Flash the firefly from TPATF, and score yet another half-right answer.

You nailed it, OUB, but the firefly's name is Ray. Still, I'll say, Good job :). You may take your turn now.

Good enough? Wonderful; it lets me segue into this Mystery Character.

    1) This character is animated, but not in any televised cartoon series nor any animated feature film. Nope, appearances are confined to Public Service Announcements.

    2) Not totally boring, either: there is singing, and some dancing, too.

    3) Related to the aforementioned Ray the firefly? Possibly, though this character has a different name for his species.

Not only would be, Saltyboot, it truly is Louie the Lightning Bug, voiced by Jack Shelton, advising young 'uns that power lines and electricity in general can be dangerous. Louie is pretty much a light bulb with eyes and feet. Not quite School House Rock, but close. Bravo, SB, this lets you get the point and the game board. :)
