    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

My bad. Anyway, you got it right, Saltyboot. Great job. :) Now for the clues:

    1. "Scruffy" was a three-part cartoon that first aired on "ABC Weekend Specials" back in 1980.

    2. Just when it seems Scruffy and the other stray dogs are about to be euthanized at the dog pound, their lives are spared when the puppy's picture is seen on the front page of the local paper.

    3. She was voiced by Nancy McKeon, who played Jo on "The Facts Of Life."

4, Both her mother Dutchess and the street actor Joe Tibbles meet with tragic deaths.

    5. When she and the other strays are adopted, she and Butch are adopted by the same family.

    6. The story was narrated by Alan Young, who played Wilbur Post on "Mr. Ed," and later voiced 7-Zark-7 on "Battle Of The Planets."

So it's all yours again, Saltyboot.

My owner brought me from Africa to live in the city.

Thanks again, Saltyboot. Here's one that I put off posting until now:

    1. I'm named for a French leader, but modeled on a Russian one.

    2. My creator also introduced his Big Brother to the world.

    3. Despite being released sixty years ago, my animated film was the first to advise viewer discretion.

Not too difficult, this one! It's Napoleon, from Animal Farm.

Yes, Pete. You got it. But I'll still explain the clues:

    1. Though named for Napoleon, he was actually modeled after Stalin.

    2. "Animal Farm" was written by George Orwell, also well-known for "1984."

    3. Halas And Batchelor released this film in 1954. But it was anything but kid friendly. In fact, it was incredibly graphic, just like the book.

So you're up, Pete. Great job. :)

Halas & Batchelor really owe the success of Animal Farm to the closure of two other UK studios. Although they had made a name for themselves producing information films and commercials, they were quite a small unit, unable to handle a whole feature. The closure of Anson Dyer's studio in Stroud made available not only a bigger production facility but also Britain's best animator, Harold Whitacker, both of which H&B quickly scooped up. And the closure of Rank's G-B Animation unit at Cookham (who made David Hand's Animaland cartoons) released a large number of trained talent into the market, just when H&B needed them. It's an ill wind that blows no good, as they say!

    On with the next character...

    1) My name reflects my pen and ink nature.

    2) My creator frequently appears in my films.

    3) I came along before he took up with a rabbit and ultimately headed his own studio.

    Good guess, but...

Although Rudolph Ising appeared with Bosko in their pilot film, this was not a frequent occurrence - I think Ride Him, Bosko is the only Schlesinger short where Rudy and Hugh appear (at the end, they can't think of a way for Bosko to rescue Honey, so they leave him riding and go home). Also, I think it was Hugh Harman, rather than Rudy, who designed Bosko.

    So no, not Bosko.

I was gonna guess Bosko, but I had thought he was already on the list. I think I need more clues, though.

Yeah, when I checked the list I was surprised that Bosko wasn't there. Anyway, I'll need to see the next set of clues.

Sorry to keep you waiting - here they come!

    4) I am a boy with a pet dog - hardly an original concept.

    5) I often appear in the 'real' world.

    6) My creator worked for one of the earliest cartoon factories.

OK, the only character that I can come up with is Bobby Bumps. I know it's not the right answer but hey, sometimes I luck out.

Worth a try, but no cigar! Bobby Bumps and Fido were one of two "boy and dog" combos that the studio in question had already used, prior to the creation of the character in question.
