    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

Well, the mythical bird / capital city of Arizona is Phoenix. The Swedish pop group has songs titled "Fernando" and "Chiquitita," but neither of them click with a phoenix. Longshot here: could this be Nina Williams, martial artist from the Tekken movie? There is a Phoenix character from the console game, but he doesn't appear in the film.

What great clues! OUB was well on the way, but missed the Abba song - this is Honey Honey, from Honey Honey no Suteki na Bouken

Pete, you nailed it. Now to clear things up:

    1. After her cat Lily swallowed the Star Of The Amazon, Honey Honey left the royal palace of Princess Flora, and took Lily with her.

    2. She was chased not only by the Princess, but also by several men Flora hired, and by Phoenix, who wanted the jewel for himself, but also fell for the heroine.

    3. Self-explanatory.

So you get another turn, Pete. Great job! :)

    1) I am a later addition to the franchise.
    2) I was created by the producer/director of the first TV special, and retained in the second.
    3) I guess he thought the title pair were not kiddie-friendly enough without a cute pet!

So many franchises with cute pets, I think I need something a little more specific here.

    OK - last 3 clues!

    4) In the first special I get preserved.
    5) In the second special I have become a master of the skateboard.
    6) As I said, I'm a later addition - I'm not in the original books, the 3 animated shorts or the movie. And I'm replaced by a nameless (but more vocal) pair of pets in the TV series.

I'll leave you with one last bonus clue!

My creator directed a lot of TV specials over a 20 year period - mine may not have been a high-point in his (illustrious) career.

It's bedtime here in the UK - so I'll bid you all goodnight. I do hope someone has solved it by tomorrow morning!

Just to lob a brick and stay in character: Wassiznayme the white rabbit that lives in the magician's hat from Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass productions Frosty The Snowman and Frosty Returns. He's the deucedly elusive trickster that ultimately puts the magic hat on the snowman's head that *poof* "Happy Birthday!" transforms him into Frosty the Snowman.

Oh dear - as I've said before, when no-one guesses it I fear I may have got something wrong!

    The answer is: Raggedy Arthur.

The clues explained (have I got something wrong?):

    1) That's the Raggedy Ann & Andy franchise, owned at the time by publishers Bobbs Merrill.
    2) Chuck Jones claimed to have invented Raggedy Arthur, though it may be that Bobbs Merrill wanted to include a cute dog toy in their toy range. In The Great Santa Claus Caper Arthur is only there so that something that Ann and Andy care about can be "gloopstik"-ed (gloopstuk?) and finally reveal gloopstik's vulnerability to "love".
    3) Did Chuck think a cute animal was an essential element in a TV cartoon - that Ann and Andy were too static and talky to keep toddlers interested? Who knows -The Great Santa Claus Caper is probably CJE's worst product: one gets the feeling that Chuck had little enthusiasm for it.
    4) As previously mentioned, Arthur is dropped into Alexander Graham Wolf's Gloopstik machine - designed to preserve toys forever in a transparent block. Executive interference seems apparent here - Arthur's head extends outside the block "so that he can breathe", as the Big Bad Wolf explains. I imagine Chuck originally had Arthur totally encased, but an executive objected - "he wouldn't be able to breathe!". Presumably Chuck's potential response ("He's a toy! Toys don't have to breathe!") was overruled ("we don't want to upset any children") and the stupid compromise (so Arthur's body is preserved but his head will wear out?!) built into the script.
    5) Arthur's lack of activity in the first Special is made up for in The Pumpkin Who Couldn't Smile by making him the Silver Surfer of skateboarders!
    6) Refers to the 1941 Fleischer Raggedy Ann and Andy short and the subsequent two Famous Studios ones, and the 1977 Dick Williams movie. The 1988 TV series had Raggedy Dog and Raggedy Cat, talking toys, but no Raggedy Arthur.

    Here's my next character, then...

    1) At the start of the movie I've turned to drink, and my business is going to ruin.
    2) I get kicked out, and go to the pub.
    3) I am blown up performing a bit of drunken sabotage.

For your first character, peterhale, I have never heard of Raggedy Arthur, as I have never seen any of Chuck Jones' Raggedy Ann work. The only Raggedy ann cartoons I've seen are the 1977 Raggedy Ann and Andy movie, and the 1988 Saturday morning series (but I don't remember that one all that well). As for your second character, I don't have the slightest idea again. As for your clues, I can't speak much for everyone else here, but I find them to be on the extremely challenging side, and therefore, don't have any idea where to start looking. But that's just me.

Yes - I seem to be very bad at judging my clues - knowing the answer, I always feel they are give-aways. It is only later I see how obscure they sometimes are.

    4) This is not an American movie (although it was funded by an American organisation).
    5) It is based on an allegorical book.
    6) After I was evicted it ceased to be my Manor.
