    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

    That's Miles Standish.

    1. His courtship failed miserably.

    2. Priscilla fell for John Alden instead.

    3. Self-explanatory.

That is correct emeraldisle. It's Miles from The Hardship of Miles Standish. I knew someone would get this one right away.

Thanks, Salty. Now here are clues I feel like posting as we move closer to the big day:

    1. We're the youngest ones in a Thanksgiving special produced by Emeraldisle's favorite studio.

    2. Our story is told in flashback by a descendant of our rescuer.

    3. Our adventure in the woods almost prevents the first Thanksgiving feast.

Johnny Cook and Little Bear from "The Thanksgiving That Almost Wasn't," I'm sure of it.

Yes, Fluidgirl, you nailed it good. Now to explain the clues:

    1. Johnny and Little Bear are the youngest Pilgrim and Native American, respectively. And of course, Hanna-Barbera is my favorite animation studio, as everyone here knows.

    2. The narrator is an adult male squirrel, descendant of Jeremy Squirrel, who tells the tale to his son.

    3. When the boys go into the woods, Jeremy saves them from a waterfall and a wolf while the male Pilgrims and Native Americans desperately search for them. This delays the first Thanksgiving feast for quite a while. Good thing it lasted three days.

So you get another turn, Fluidgirl. Great job, and have a nice Thanksgiving. :)

Unfortunately, I don't have any Thanksgiving themed cartoons in mind, so I'll just have to make do with someone else, but this'll probably be a no brainer.

    1. My name says a lot about my personality

    2. Despite my age, I'm a real swinger

    3. I just adore my pet

Easy, It's Granny Sweet, from "Precious Pupp,."

    1. Self-explanatory.

    2. As old as she is, she does everything from riding a motorbike to skiing.

    3. She adores Precious, and is clueless about his true nature.

Thanks, Fluidgirl. Here's another simple one:

    1. I"m the kid sister of one who's never been able to kick a football or fly a kite.

    2. I have a schoolgirl crush on one who walks around with a blanket.

    3. In the Thanksgiving special, I invite my guy just so he and I can hold hands under the table.

    I think I got one.
    1. I walk into a general store, instrument in hand.
    2. Me and my buddies practically wreck the place with our enthusiastic playing.
    3. The sheriff sees everything--but does nothing about it.

This is Tom Turkey, from MGM's Tom Turkey and his Harmonica Humdingers (1940). When Tom Turkey plays harmonica in the local store the other guys who hang out there all join in, with the exception of the sheriff, who just continues to help himself from the cracker barrel.

Here is another character who never made the grade...

    1) I am a rehash of a Bob Clampett character - probably by the same storyman.

    2) I'm a country boy who goes into show business - for money in my first short, and for love in my second.

    3) Those were my only theatrical releases - the rest of my appearances were supporting roles in TV cartoons.

I've got this one--with the help of some research. This is the Walter Lantz character Sugarfoot the horse.
    1. At first, nothing came to mind--even after looking up Bob Clampett- I didn't recall any similar characters that matched the second and third clues--not until I realized it must be a character similar to that of Charlie Horse from "It's a Grand Old Nag." which I have not seen. I checked out who wrote the story for that one--Mike Maltese and continued searching until I found a cartoon called "A Horse's Tale" --Bingo!

    2. Now that I knew who the character might be, I checked out the second set of clues--the first cartoon is "A Horse's Tale" and the second one is "Hay Rube"

    3. Afterwards, Sugarfoot was seen on The Woody Woodpecker Show.

Nice bit of detective work there, Glowworm! Sugarfoot it is, for all the reasons you've given.

Mike Maltese didn't get a screen credit for "It's a Grand Old Nag" (1947; made for Republic Pictures by Bob Clampett after he left Warners and set up on his own) because he was moonlighting from WB. When WB closed their studio in 1953 Maltese moved over to Lantz. Since Republic had decided not to commission further cartoons from Clampett, Maltese had no qualms about rehashing his story: both the Sugarfoot shorts have elements derived from "It's a Grand Old Nag". He only stayed 14 months at Lantz before returning to the reopened Warner's at a higher wage, thanks to Chuck Jones.

    Take it away, Glowworm!

    Okay.
    1. We are a trio.
    2. We help our leader take over the land.
    3. However, we also are responsible for killing( and most likely eating) him when he betrays us.
